Completing a national search, SUNY Geneseo today named Michael Mooney director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation, effective July 7, 2011. Mooney had been serving as interim director since Jan. 1 following the retirement of Marilyn Moore.
Mooney emerged from a pool of more than 80 applicants as the leading candidate to sustain the tradition of excellence that has long defined Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation at Geneseo.
"I look forward to Mike working with our Student and Campus Life staff and the entire Geneseo community to continue to develop a model Division III intercollegiate athletic program and high quality recreational options for the campus community," said Robert Bonfiglio, vice president for student and campus life. According to Bonfiglio, the size and quality of the applicant pool reflect not only the vitality of the athletic program but the growing reputation of Geneseo overall.
"Over his 26-year career at Geneseo, Mike has developed a deep and thorough understanding of our college and our mission. I'm confident that under his leadership, the distinctive elements of our athletic program will continue, evidenced by our student-athlete academic achievement record, our innovative community service and sportsmanship programs, and our competitive successes."
Since joining Geneseo in 1985, Mooney has served in a number of positions including resident director, head men's soccer coach, instructor, director of intramurals and recreation, sports and recreation facility manager, assistant director, and most recently, associate director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation.
"I feel very fortunate to be selected for this position, and I look forward to leading Geneseo's athletic department to national prominence," said Mooney. "Geneseo optimizes a premier liberal arts education that allows students to excel in both academics and athletics, and I am excited to help advance that tradition."
Mooney currently serves as president of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and the national chairperson of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer All-America Committee. Previously, he was the national chairperson of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Committee.
