The Geneseo women's volleyball team won a 25-16, 25-20, 25-16 victory over Rutgers-Newark in the third match of the NYU tournament. Sophomore Ronnie Guszcza paced the Knights with 11 kills and two blocks and first year Julia Gangloff handed out 25 assists and two service aces. Senior Jackie Inserillo contributed six kills and junior Laura Galvin (pictured left) had 16 digs. In the third place match, Geneseo defeated Brockport, 25-15, 25-18, 19-25, 25-22. Sophomore Noelle Morrison dished out 34 assists and Galvin, who earned All-Tournament Team, contributed 32 digs and three service aces. First year Jessica Prater had 14 kills and senior Kat Strickland added 11 kills and three blocks. The Blue Knights are 3-1 on the season and travel to Nazareth on Wednesday.
First year Neil Allen scored two goals, including the tying score with 6:58 remaining in regulation, to aid the Geneseo men's soccer team to a 3-3 draw in the opening match of the Penn State Behrend tournament. After PSB took a 1-0 lead at 6:55, Geneseo netted two goals to lead 2-1 at the intermission. Junior Alex Stephan scored on an assist from sophomore Ryan Yurchak at 23:10 and senior Ian Mort (pictured left) picked up the first of two assists to Allen at 29:51. Behrend tied the game at 50:29 and took the lead at 61:46 of the second half. Senior Sam Murphy made two saves in nets for the Blue Knights. Geneseo advanced to tomorrow's championship game on penalty kicks.
Women's Field Hockey
Sophomore Kelsey Horan (pictured left) scored a pair of goals to lead the #20 Geneseo women's field hockey team to a 3-1 win over tournament host Wilkes (Pa.) this afternoon. Sophomore Kayla DeAngelis scored at 6:10 to open a 1-0 lead for the Blue Knights before Horan struck at 19:53 from Ashley Favata and at 25:12 from Kerry Hosford. Wilkes scored their lone goal on a corner opportunity after time had expired in the first half. Junior Caitlyn Dowell made seven saves to post the win in goal. Geneseo advances to the tournament championship against Salisbury on Sunday.
The Geneseo women's soccer team took on Medaille College in the consolation match of the Rochester tournament and won a 9-0 decision. Senior Anne Beinetti (pictured left) scored two goals and two assists to lead the offense. Senior Melanie Rocchio and junior Emily Novak scored two goals each, while Kelly Quinn, Cailin Kowalewski and Erin Beach scored one goal each. Sophomore Julia Sanger and first year Allison Stamp played 45 minutes each in sharing the shutout as the defense did not allow a shot on goal. Geneseo is 1-1-0 on the season and hosts St. Lawrence on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Women's Cross Country
The Geneseo women's cross country team traveled to the Buffalo State Invitational today and finished second of nine teams with 48 points to champion Edinboro's 24. First year Cassie Goodman placed second for the Blue Knights in 19:06 and classmate Alyssa Knott was fifth in 19:27. First year Laura Szczesniak was 10th in 19:57, sophomore Celeste Hoelzl placed 16th in 20:28 and first year Keira Wood finished 17th in 20:32. Geneseo is off next week and races at Penn State and Buffalo on September 17.
Men's Cross Country
The Geneseo men's cross country team finished second of nine teams at the Buffalo State Invitational this afternoon as first year Ryan Moynihan placed 10th in a time of 27:44 to pace the Blue Knights. Geneseo scored 82 points to champion Edinboro's 18. First year Tim Mateer was 16th in 27:52, Josh Halpern placed 18th in 27:56, Ethan Koreff was 22nd in 28:08 and Russell Larson finished 28th in 28:27. Geneseo participates at Penn State and Buffalo on September 17.
