The Geneseo men's soccer team defeated Elizabethtown by a score of 2-0 to claim the Penn State Behrend tournament championship this afternoon as senior defender Matt Solimano (pictured left) was named the Most Valuable Player. After a scoreless first half, senior midfielder John Piaggione scored his first of the season on a volley with the assist going to first year Neil Allen at 45:59. The Blue Knights made it 2-0 at 75:40 when sophomore Ryan Yurchak fought off a defender and went in on a breakaway for his first goal of the season. Senior Sam Murphy made three saves to post the win in goal as the Knights move to 1-0-1 on the season. Geneseo travels to Clarkson on Friday.
Women's Field Hockey
The #20 Geneseo women's field hockey team faced fourth-ranked Salisbury this afternoon in the championship game of the Wilkes (Pa.) tournament and dropped a tough 4-1 decision. The Blue Knights trailed 1-0 at the intermission, but Salisbury scored three times to open a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Katie Farley scored on an assist from Kayla DeAngelis at 57:27 to make the final. Junior Caitlyn Dowell made six saves in nets and sophomore defender Bridget McGovern made one defensive save for the Blue Knights. Geneseo is 1-1 on the season and travels to Hamilton on Wednesday.
