Senior Ian Mort (pictured left) scored his eighth goal of the season off an assist from classmate Colin Begy with 4:24 left in the game to lift the Geneseo men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over host New Paltz (5-5-1/1-1-1 SUNYAC). The Blue Knights posted 12 shots, while holding the Hawks to just seven attempts in moving their record to 6-2-1 overall and 3-0-0 in SUNYAC. Senior Sam Murphy made two saves to earn his fifth shutout of the year. Geneseo travels to Oneonta on Saturday.
Women's Field Hockey
The Geneseo women's field hockey team scored a pair of first half goals in defeating host Brockport by a score of 2-0. Geneseo outshot the Golden Eagles by an 18-4 margin and junior Nicole Zito (pictured left) posted one save to earn the shutout. Sophomore Kayla DeAngelis netted the opening goal, her ninth of the season, on a tip-in off a shot by classmate Katie Farley at 14:23. Geneseo made it 2-0 at 21:33 off a penalty corner as sophomore Kerry Hosford fed sophomore Bridget McGovern for her third goal of the year. Geneseo moves to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in SUNYAC and travels to St. Lawrence on Tuesday.
Senior Julia Passik (pictured left) won second singles, 6-0, 6-2 and teamed with classmate Monica Vieth to win 8-6 at first doubles to lead the Geneseo women's tennis team to a 7-2 win over Cortland in a match played at Mendon Racquet Club. First year Shiho Sato won a pair of matches by taking third singles at love and teaming with Kaho Sato to win at third doubles, 8-0. Geneseo took a 3-0 lead after doubles play as seniors Reggie Connelly and Lauren Johnson won 9-8 (5) at second doubles. First year Amanda Rosati and junior Sarah Shields remained unbeaten in singles action as the former won 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles and the latter captured sixth singles, 6-1, 6-2. Geneseo moves to 7-1 overall and travels to RIT on Tuesday.
The Geneseo women's volleyball team traveled to Nazareth College tonight for a pair of matches in the Golden Flyer Invitational and lost to RIT, 25-11, 25-21, 20-25, 25-12 and fell to Heidelberg, 25-11, 25-17, 25-15. In the opener, senior Kat Strickland and first year Jessica Prater had 12 kills each to lead the Blue Knights. Sophomore Noelle Morrison (pictured left) handed out 34 assists with nine digs and five service aces and junior Laura Galvin posted 16 digs. In the nightcap, Morrison dished 14 assists, Strickland and Prater totaled five kills and Galvin notched 11 digs. Geneseo is 11-10 on the season and continues with the Nazareth tournament on Saturday.
The visiting New Paltz Hawks capitalized on their opportunities by scoring three times on eight shots to defeat the Geneseo women's soccer team, 3-0. New Paltz took a 1-0 lead at 9:36 when Shelby Kondelka picked up a bad clear at the top of the 18 yard box and slid a shot inside the left post past Geneseo goalkeeper Julia Sanger. In the second half, Kondelka picked up another failed clear and tapped in a shot from eight yards out for a 2-0 lead at 85:08. The Hawks completed the scoring at 85:08 when a shot by Beth Bowling was originally saved, but a sliding Geneseo defender knocked the ball from a sprawling Sanger into the net for an own goal. Sanger posted three saves in taking the loss as the Blue Knights fall to 7-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in SUNYAC. Geneseo hosts Oneonta on Saturday at 1 p.m.
