The SUNYAC West #1 Seed Geneseo Blue Knights (10-1) defeated SUNYAC East #2 Cortland by a score of 6-3 in the semifinals of the 2011 SUNYAC Women's Tennis Championships this afternoon at Manlius Tennis Club in Syracuse, N.Y.
The tournament is being conducted under the following rules:
1) Doubles will be an 8 game pro-set. At 8 all we play a twelve point tie breaker which is first one to 7 and win by 2 points.
2) Singles matches will be played to completion. However after the overall match is decided the following will apply:
a. Matches already in progress will be completed as follows. Any sets already in progress will be played using the standard format. All additional sets will be determined by playing super tie breaks (First to 10 and win by 2 points).
b. Any remaining matches that have not started will be played using an 8 game proset format. Twelve point tie break.
Geneseo swept the three doubles matches as seniors Monica Vieth and Julia Passik (pictured left) won 8-5 at first doubles, seniors Lauren Johnson and Reggie Connelly won 8-4 at second doubles and Shiho and Kaho Sato won 8-1 at third doubles.
In singles, Geneseo clinched the match with wins at fifth and sixth singles as first year Amanda Rosati won 6-1, 6-0 at fifth and junior Sarah Shields captured sixth, 6-2, 6-2.
In other singles action, first year Dexuan Yuan won 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 at second singles, while Vieth lost 8-4 at first singles and Shiho Sato and Passik retired at third and fourth singles, respectively.
The Blue Knights advance to Sunday's 11:30 a.m. championship match against the East #1 seed, New Paltz. The Hawks defeated East #3 Oneonta by a score of 6-3 in the semifinals, but fell to Geneseo in the regular season, 9-0, on September 16.
