Saturday's Contest Summaries

Women's Volleyball

Senior Kat Strickland (pictured left) posted 16 kills and four service aces to help the host Geneseo women's volleyball team snap an eight-game losing skid with a 24-26, 25-15, 25-11, 25-12 win over the Canton Kangaroos. Sophomore Noelle Morrison dished out 39 assists for Geneseo, sophomore Alysia Negron contributed nine kills, junior Laura Galvin had 17 digs and senior Megan Reed posted seven kills. In match two of the afternoon, Geneseo defeated Houghton College, 23-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-23. Strickland led the attack with 18 kills and five blocks, while Morrison dished 41 assists with seven digs and five kills. Sophomore Ronnie Gusczca posted 10 kills and three blocks and Galvin contributed 11 digs. The Blue Knights move to 13-14 on the season and host Elmira for Senior Night on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Men's Soccer

First year Neil Allen (pictured left) scored his fifth goal of the season at the 2:59 mark of overtime to give the visiting Geneseo men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Cortland (2-8-5/1-5-2 SUNYAC) this afternoon. The Blue Knights had an 18-8 shot advantage as senior Sam Murphy was forced to make just one save in posting the shutout. On the winning goal, Allen took advantage of a Cortland misplay and deposited a 23-yard shot into an open net. The Blue Knights move to 8-5-1 overall and 5-2-0 in SUNYAC play and host the Plattsburgh Cardinals on Friday at 3 p.m.

Women's Soccer

The Geneseo women's soccer team hosted first place Cortland (10-4-1/7-1-0 SUNYAC) this afternoon and dropped a 1-0 decision despite outshooting the Red Dragons, 10-8. Geneseo controlled play throughout the match and posted four corner kicks to one by Cortland. The Red Dragons capitalized on one of their few quality chances as Amanda Margolis played the ball into the middle from the left side, where Jennifer Cadolina collected the pass, beat a defender to the right and scored into the upper right corner from 15 yards out at the 12:15 mark of the first half. Geneseo's Julia Sanger made three saves in taking the loss as the Blue Knights fall to 10-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in SUNYAC. Geneseo travels to Plattsburgh on Friday.

Women's Field Hockey

Despite outshooting their opponent, 13-6, and posting 15 penalty corners to just four, the visiting Geneseo women's field hockey team lost a tough 1-0 decision at Oneonta this afternoon. The Red Dragons took a 1-0 lead at the 6:46 mark and staved off the Blue Knight onslaught the rest of the way to hold on for the victory. Junior Caitlyn Dowell made four saves in taking the loss as Geneseo falls to 7-7 on the year and 3-2 in SUNYAC play. Geneseo hosts Nazareth on Thursday for Senior Day at 4 p.m.

Women's Cross Country

The women's cross country team traveled to the Rochester Invitational today with a majority of the top runners resting as the Blue Knights finished in fourth place of 13 teams with 117 points. Senior Alyssa Smith ran to a fourth place individual finish in 18:51 to pace Geneseo. Junior Brigid Heenan was 27th in 19:49, first year Alyssa Knott ran 30th in 20:00, Laura Szcezesniak was 35th in 20:13 and sophomore Mary Aldridge ran 55th in 20:52 to complete the scoring runners. Geneseo is off next week and travels to New Paltz for the SUNYAC Championships on Saturday, October 29.

Men's Cross Country

First year Tim Mateer ran an 18th place time of 27:10 to lead the Geneseo Blue Knights to a fourth place finish of 16 teams with 135 points at the Rochester Invitational this afternoon as Geneseo rested their top 10 runners. Geneseo's Tim Chambers was 23rd in 27:25, first year Cole DeClerck was 29th in 27:36, Mike Mattiucci placed 35th in a time of 27:48 and Ethan Koreff was 39th in 27:50. Geneseo is off next week and travels to the SUNYAC Championships at New Paltz on Saturday, October 29.
