Senior Kelly Bergin (pictured left) scored a goal and an assist, including the eventual game-winner to lead the Geneseo Blue Knights to a 2-1 win over host Plattsburgh this afternoon. Geneseo scored the opening goal on their only shot of the first half as Bergin sent a corner kick and senior Anne Beinetti notched her team-high 15th goal of the season at 19:48. In the second half, Geneseo took a 2-0 lead at 49:34 when junior Shannon Spusta's shot rebounded to Bergin, who finished for her sixth marker of the campaign. Plattsburgh broke up the shutout with a rebound goal of their own at 55:03. Sophomore Julia Sanger made three saves to earn the win as the Blue Knights move to 11-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in SUNYAC. Geneseo travels to Potsdam on Saturday.
The Geneseo women's volleyball team traveled to Brockport for the second round of SUNYAC West round robin pool play today and swept a pair of matches to clinch a spot in the SUNYAC tournament as the top three teams earn playoff berths. In the opener, the Blue Knights defeated previously SUNYAC West unbeaten Buffalo State (4-2), 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23. First year Jessica Prater led the attack with 15 kills, sophomore Alysia Negron had 12 kills and senior Kat Strickland added 11 kills. Sophomore Noelle Morrison (pictured left) dished 43 assists, junior Laura Galvin had 19 digs and first year Julia Gangloff contributed 14 digs. In the second match, Strickland posted 18 kills in a 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-18 win over the host Golden Eagles (2-4). Prater contributed 12 kills and three blocks, Morrison handed out 41 helpers with 12 digs and Galvin added 22 digs. Geneseo evens their record at 15-15 overall and moves to 4-2 in SUNYAC West. Geneseo continues with pool play at Brockport on Saturday by taking on first place Fredonia (5-1) and Oswego (0-6).
The Geneseo men's soccer team hosted the Plattsburgh Cardinals (12-2-2/4-2-2 SUNYAC) this afternoon and lost a tough 2-1 outcome. Geneseo outplayed Plattsburgh early in the first half and were rewarded with a goal at 14:13. Junior Jop Smit fed a through ball up the right side to senior James Hainsworth (pictured left), who cut back to the middle, beat two defenders and scored inside the right post for his first goal of the season. Plattsburgh tied the game 1:33 later when Mike Payne fed a through ball to the right side of the penalty area which eluded Geneseo goalkeeper Sam Murphy and Tom Greene ran past and deposited the ball into the open net. Plattsburgh attempted just two shots in the first half, but outplayed the Blue Knights in the second half, getting 11 shots on net, including two that hit the crossbar, before Pat Shaughnessy finished a rebound for the game-winner at 81:31. Murphy made four saves in taking the loss for the Blue Knights, who fall to 8-6-1 overall and 5-3-0 in SUNYAC. Geneseo hosts Potsdam on Saturday at 1 p.m.
