Saturday's Contest Summaries

Men's Ice Hockey

Senior Cory Gershon (pictured left) made 22 saves to backstop the Geneseo men's ice hockey team to a 4-2 win over host Cortland (2-2-0/1-2-0 SUNYAC) tonight. Junior Corbin Rosmarin gave Geneseo a 1-0 lead after one period with a goal from Rich Manley at 14:57. Geneseo made it 2-0 at 9:13 of the second when first year Peter Mott got his first career goal from Brandon Angotti and Zachary Vit. Sophomore Carson Schell scored his second of the year from Colin de Jersey at 19:18 of the second for a 3-0 lead. Cortland got back into the contest with a goal at 19:28 of the second and a shorthanded score at 8:31 of the third. Senior Clint Olson converted a pass from junior Ryan Bulach for his second goal of the year, shorthanded at 16:41 to complete the scoring. Geneseo moves to 3-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in SUNYAC and hosts Brockport on Friday at 7 p.m.

Men's Basketball

Senior Mike Hoy (pictured left) hit 4-6 from the floor, 2-3 from the arc and 5-6 from the free throw line for 15 points with seven rebounds to lead the host Geneseo Blue Knights to a 61-44 exhibition win over the Queens (Ont.) University Gaels. Sophomore Jordan Jones added 10 points and junior Ryan Riefenhauser scored seven points with six steals for Geneseo. Four other players had six points for the Blue Knights, including first year Gordon Lyons, who was 6-8 from the charity stripe and added six rebounds. Geneseo finished the first half on a 12-6 run to take a 28-19 lead, before taking command of the contest with a 10-5 run to open the second stanza. Geneseo opens the regular season at Medaille College on November 15.

Men's Swimming & Diving

First year John Nasky (pictured left) set the Steele Hall pool record in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:52.12 in helping the visiting Geneseo men's swimming and diving team to a 195-99 win over Fredonia. Senior Josh Kaplan and first year Kenny Athans each won two events with the former taking the 100 and 200 backstrokes in 54.45 and 1:58.82 and the latter claiming the 100 breast in 1:03.64 and the 400 IM in 4:19.32. Geneseo had six other winners this afternoon as senior Aaron Wagner won the 200 free in 1:50.91, Jeff Singer touched first in the 200 fly in 2:06.91, junior Frank Schiappa won the 50 free in 22.02, senior Ken Pink took the 200 breast in 2:18.03, senior Drew Rogers won the 500 free in 5:11.34 and junior Austin Brennan captured the 100 fly in 54.48. Geneseo is 1-1 on the season and travels to Cortland on Saturday.

Women's Swimming & Diving

Sophomore Lily Powell (pictured left) won three events to lead the Geneseo women's swimming and diving team to a 168-132 win over host Fredonia this afternoon. Powell won the 200 fly (2:11.94), the 500 free (5:26.80) and the 400 IM (4:55.43). Junior Kaitlin Wilcoxen and first year Abby Max won two events each as Wilcoxen took the 100 and 200 breaststroke events in 1:09.95 and 2:31.59 and Max won the 200 free in 1:59.31 and the 200 back in 2:15.03. Junior Elyssa Max won the 50 free in 25.86 and Corinne Vairo won the 100 free in 56.15. Geneseo is 2-0 on the season and travels to Cortland on Saturday

Women's Basketball

The defending SUNYAC women's basketball champion Geneseo Blue Knights opened their season with a 66-55 loss to the Queens (Ont.) University Gaels in the Carl Schrader Gym this afternoon. In the first half, Geneseo held the Gaels scoreless for the first 7:04 of the contest and a 10-0 lead, but Queens responded with a 32-12 burst the rest of way for a 32-22 halftime lead. Queens extended the lead to a game-high 16 points at 49-33, but Geneseo responded with a 17-6 run of their own to pull within five at 55-50 with 4:56 to play as first year Cara Manfredi scored seven of her nine points during the spurt. The Gaels scored the next five points to reclaim control of the contest. Junior Melissa Graham (pictured left) led the way with 13 points and six rebounds for the Blue Knights and first year Shannon McGinnis netted 10 points with nine caroms, including 5-6 from the line. Sophomore Lea Sobieraski added eight points and six boards and senior Katelyn Charbonneau made 3-4 on her way to seven points. Geneseo opens the regular season against Wesleyan at Old Westbury on Saturday, November 19.
