Due to knee injuries to a pair of starting players, sophomore defender Alexa Vojvodic (Mineola, N.Y./Sacred Heart) has been called to a tryout by the Croatian Senior National team and will head to Europe to train with the team in hopes of making the playing roster for a pair of games in the United European Football Association (UEFA) Women's EURO championship qualifiers.
A dual citizen of the U.S. and Croatia, Vojvodic had an opportunity to train with the Croatian Under 19 team in August, but chose not to participate due to her preseason commitment to the Blue Knights. This initial opportunity to play for the national program arose through a high school connection, Natalie Cikos, a current senior at Sacred Heart High School that is a member of the Croatian National Team.
Vojvodic leaves for Europe on Saturday, November 12 and will train with the team beginning on Wednesday, November 16. If selected by the Croatian National team coaching staff, she would be in uniform for two qualifier contests before returning to the U.S. as Croatia travels to play Serbia on Saturday, November 19 and to The Netherlands on Thursday, November 24.
