Sophomore Rich Manley scored two goals and junior Adrian Rubeniuk made 33 saves to lead the visiting Geneseo Ice Knights to a 4-2 win over #6 Elmira tonight. Geneseo got off to a slow start as the Soaring Eagles scored only 16 seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead. Manley sent the game into the first intermission tied at one as he scored from sophomore Zachary Vit and junior Corbin Rosmarin at 4:54. In the second period, Geneseo exploded for three goals to take a 4-1 lead. Manley scored his fourth goal of the year from Rosmarin at 7:56 to take the lead. At the 9:41 mark, Vit scored his eighth goal of the season, this one coming on the power play, with Rosmarin picking up his third assist of the game and junior defenseman Colin de Jersey adding a helper. The Ice Knights struck again on the power play at 18:46 as senior Clint Olson scored for the fourth time on the campaign from senior Jimmy Powers. Geneseo moves to 7-6-0 on the season and travels to Franklin Pierce on Friday and Saturday, January 6-7.
Junior Melissa Graham led five double digit scorers with 15 points on 7-9 from the field and 1-1 from the arc to lead the visiting Geneseo women's basketball team to a 72-60 win over Potsdam this afternoon. First year Shannon McGinnis scored the final six points of the opening half to give Geneseo a 45-35 lead and the Blue Knights led by as many as 24 in the second half as they cruised to the victory. McGinnis finished with 13 points and six rebounds on six of nine from the field, first year Katie Peterson and senior Katelyn Charbonneau contributed 12 points each with the latter adding eight boards and five assists, while senior Bri Dunton hit 4-7 from the floor and 2-3 from long range for 10 points with six helpers and five caroms. The Blue Knights move to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in SUNYAC and return to action on Tuesday, January 3 by hosting Alfred.
The Potsdam Bears used a 22-2 run over the final 4:47 of regulation and initial 4:40 of overtime in defeating the visiting Geneseo men's basketball team by a score of 66-56. In the first half, Geneseo used a 9-0 run to take a 12-8 lead early in the first half on a three-pointer by first year James McKenna with 10:52 to play. Classmate Andy Drescher's long range shot gave the Blue Knights their largest lead of the first half at 19-14 with 5:30 left, but Potsdam clawed back to take a 26-25 lead at the break. In the second half, McKenna's three-pointer capped an 11-2 run that gave the Blue Knights a 45-36 lead with 9:08 remaining, but Potsdam used a 10-2 burst down the stretch to pull within 53-52 with 1:22 to play. After a missed jumper and missed free throw by Geneseo, the Bears tied the score by making one of two free throws with 22 seconds left, however, the Blue Knights could not get a last shot off in the waning seconds. Potsdam scored 11 straight points to open the overtime before Drescher broke the skid with a three-pointer with 20 seconds left. Senior Abe Miller hit five of six shots for 10 points and McKenna was three of five from the field, two of four from the arc and two for two from the line for 10 points to pace Geneseo. Junior Ryan Riefenhauser was 4-7 from the floor on the way to nine points with seven rebounds. Geneseo falls to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in SUNYAC and hosts D'Youville on Monday, January 2 at 7 p.m.
