Junior Ryan Riefenhauser made 8-14 from the field and 2-2 from the line for 18 points with eight rebounds to lead the visiting Geneseo men's basketball team to a 63-60 upset of Cortland (8-4/4-2 SUNYAC). The Blue Knights raced to a 36-29 lead at the half and extended to their largest lead at 52-39 with 13:35 left in the second stanza on a layup by Riefenhauser. Cortland stormed back with a 20-6 run to take a 59-58 lead with 4:45 remaining in the contest. A free throw by sophomore Connor Fedge and a pair of buckets by Riefenhauser reclaimed the lead for Geneseo at 63-59 with 2:01 left. Cortland hit a free throw with 50 seconds to play to climb within three. After a miss by the Blue Knights with 15 seconds left and a Cortland timeout with eight ticks remaining, the Red Dragons missed a potential game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer. Sophomore Matt Curry made 5-9 from the floor on his way to 12 points with nine rebounds, Fedge scored 10 points on three of five shooting with five assists and sophomore Jordan Jones added 10 points. Geneseo moves to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in SUNYAC and hosts Fredonia on Friday at 8 p.m.
Men's Ice Hockey
Senior forward David Arduin scored his first career hat trick and junior netminder Adrian Rubeniuk posted his first career shuout with 12 saves to lead the Geneseo men's ice hockey team to an 8-0 victory over the host Franklin Pierce Ravens (1-8-3). Senior forward Jonathan Redlick, junior forward Ryan Bulach and sophomore forward Carson Schell scored a goal and an assist, while seniors Clint Olson, Stefan Decosse, Jake Yard and Danny Scagnelli each handed out two assists. Geneseo led 3-0 after one period on a power play goal by sophomore Zachary Vit at 17:38 and a pair of goals by Arduin at 18:11 and 18:28 and exploded for five scores in the second frame. Arduin completed the hat trick at 2:13, Bulach scored at 5:08, Redlick at 8:56, first year Zack Cavallini scored his first career goal at 18:21 and Schell completed the scoring on the power play at 19:32. Geneseo moves to 9-6-0 on the season and hosts Hobart on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Geneseo women's basketball team traveled to Cortland this afternoon and dropped a 75-66 decision to the Red Dragons. Cortland hit nine of their 11 three-point field goals in the first half, the last coming with 4:08 remaining to give the Red Dragons a 12-point lead at 43-31. Geneseo responded with a 10-0 run to close the half and a two-point deficit at the intermission as junior Melissa Graham completed the run with a layup with four seconds left. In the second half, Cortland outscored the Blue Knights 17-2 early in the half and led by as many as 19 points at 65-46 with 9:18 to play. Geneseo's Katelyn Charbonneau hit a three-point field goal with 6:31 to play to end another 10-point spurt by the Knights to cut the lead to 65-56. A conventional three-point play by Shannon McGinnis with 1:33 to play cut the lead to seven, but the Knights would get no closer. Charbonneau hit 5-11 from the field, 3-7 from the arc and 2-2 from the line for 15 points with a career-high 11 rebounds and four assists to lead Geneseo. McGinnis finished with 12 points and six boards, first year Katie Peterson and sophomore Lea Sobieraski each scored nine points with eight rebounds. Geneseo falls to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in SUNYAC play and travels to Keuka on Tuesday.
