The Geneseo women's basketball team held the visiting Fredonia Blue Devils to just 10 points in the first half as they raced to a 48-10 lead at the break and cruised to a 71-50 win. Junior Melissa Graham scored 12 points with nine rebounds, five assists, four blocks and three steals to lead the Blue Knights. Senior Meg Prue and first year Shannon McGinnis added nine points each with the latter grabbing eight boards. Senior Katelyn Charbonneau, sophomore Lea Sobieraski and first year Cara Manfredi contributed seven points each as 11 of Geneseo's 14 players scored. Geneseo scored the opening nine points of the game and had a spurt of 21-0 to lead 39-7 with 2:52 to play in the half. The Blue Knights move to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in SUNYAC and host Buffalo State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Men's Ice Hockey
Goaltender T.J Fatse made 46 saves and Trent Krueger scored the lone goal of the game on the power play at the 9:04 mark of the first period to lead the Western New England Golden Bears (8-6-0) to a 1-0 win over the host Geneseo men's ice hockey team tonight in the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena. The Golden Bears held the Ice Knights to 0-6 on the power play and converted the lone goal on four chances as Chris Connors and Brandon Stroud picked up assists on the play. Junior Adrian Rubeniuk made 18 saves for Geneseo, who kept the pressure on Fatse the entire contest with 20 shots on goal in the first period, 10 in the second and 16 in the third. Geneseo, who had their five-game win streak snapped, falls to 10-7-0 on the season and travels to Buffalo State on Friday.
Fredonia's Kevin Mitchell hit the first of two free throws with 0.1 seconds left to lift the visiting Blue Devils (7-5/2-4 SUNYAC) to a 68-67 win over the Geneseo men's basketball team tonight in the Carl Schrader Gymnasium. Geneseo sophomore Connor Fedge hit a pair of foul shots to tie the game at 67 with nine seconds left and junior Marcus Hoy created a loose ball on the ensuing inbounds pass and Geneseo earned the ball on the alternating possession with seven seconds left. On the Blue Knights inbound pass, Fredonia deflected the ball towards midcourt and Mitchell went on a 2-on-1 with Dalton Kashmer. After Kashmer missed a short jumper, Mitchell was fouled after grabbing the offensive rebound. Fredonia jumped out to an early lead in the first half at 21-14 with 8:07 left, but the Blue Knights stormed back to tie the game at 29 at the intermission as sophomore Matt Curry hit a trio of three-pointers during the run. In the second half, Geneseo led by six at 45-39 with 13:00 to play, but the Blue Devils responded with a 7-0 run to take a one-point advantage. The game was tied 13 times, nine in the second half and Fredonia held a four-point lead at 64-60 with 4:18 to play on a pair of free throws by Kashmer, who led them with 16 points. Curry's career-high sixth three-pointer of the game cut the lead to 64-63 and a layup by junior Ryan Riefenhauser gave the Blue Knights a one-point cushion with 1:17 to go. Mitchell his a layup and Damien Goodwin cashed one of two from the line to give Fredonia a 67-65 lead with 20 ticks to go. Curry hit 10-15 from the field and 6-8 from the arc for a career-best 26 points with five rebounds to pace Geneseo. Riefenhauser added 12 points, eight boards and seven assists on six of eight shooting, sophomore Jordan Jones collected 12 points and first year Gordon Lyons hit all four of his field goals and both of his free throws for a career-best 10 points. Geneseo falls to 4-8 overall and 2-3 in SUNYAC and hosts Buffalo State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
