2012 SUNYAC WINTER CHAMPIONSHIPS
The women's and men's basketball teams open this week's SUNYAC Winter Championships for the Geneseo Blue Knights.Tickets to all SUNYAC events are $5 for adults and $2 for students. SUNY Geneseo will provide the first 200 SUNY Geneseo students a FREE ticket at the door to each game of Tuesday's women's and men's basketball quarterfinal contests for a total of 400 free tickets!
The Blue Knight women's basketball team posted a regular season record of 16-9 with an 11-7 mark in conference play on their way to the #4 seed in the championship tournament. Geneseo hosts #5 Cortland (15-10/10-8 SUNYAC) in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Geneseo captured a 75-63 win in overtime at Geneseo on December 6, while the Red Dragons grabbed a 75-66 victory at home on January 7.
The other quarterfinal contests feature #1 Buffalo St. vs. #8 Fredonia, #7 Plattsburgh traveling to #2 New Paltz and #3 Oneonta hosting #6 Oswego. The quarterfinal winners advance to the semifinals on Friday, February 24 at 6 & 8 p.m. at the highest remaining seed, with the championship game is slated for Saturday, February 25 at 4 p.m.
The Geneseo men's basketball team posted a regular season record of 13-12 with an 11-7 mark in conference play on their way to the #3 seed in the championship tournament. Geneseo hosts #6 Fredonia (13-11/8-10 SUNYAC) in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Fredonia defeated the Blue Knights twice this season, 68-67 at Geneseo on January 13 and 62-50 at home on February 11.
The other quarterfinal contests feature #1 Oswego vs. #8 New Paltz, #7 Plattsburgh traveling to #2 Cortland and #4 Brockport hosting #5 Buffalo State. The quarterfinal winners advance to the semifinals on Friday, February 24 at 6 & 8 p.m. at the highest remaining seed, with the championship game is slated for Saturday, February 25 at 4 p.m.
In men's ice hockey, Geneseo earned the #4 seed in the SUNYAC tournament with an overall record of 13-11-1 and a SUNYAC mark of 7-8-1. The first round of the six-team tournament takes place on Wednesday, February 22 with the Ice Knights hosting #5 Fredonia at 7 p.m. and #3 Buffalo State entertaining #6 Potsdam.
This season, Geneseo defeated Fredonia on October 29 at home by a score of 2-1 and the Blue Devils notched a 4-2 victory at home on January 21.
Top-seeded Oswego and #2 Plattsburgh receive a first round bye and will host the semifinals on Saturday, February 25. The SUNYAC tournament is rebracketed following the first round games with Oswego facing the lowest remaining seed and Plattsburgh taking on the highest remaining seed.
SUNY Geneseo Athletics will provide the first 1000 SUNY Geneseo students a FREE ticket at the door to Wednesday's men's ice hockey first round game!
The SUNYAC championship game is slated for Saturday, March 3 at the highest remaining seed.
The Geneseo women's and men's indoor track and field team travels to Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York on Sunday, February 26. The men's team finished second by one point to the Buffalo State Bengals in 2011 after winning the title in 2010 as the Blue Knights have won six of the past 11 indoor conference championships. On the women's side, Geneseo, who finished second to Buffalo State in 2011, looks for their first SUNYAC title since 2006, when they captured their fourth consecutive crown.
