Junior midfield Stephen Romano scored six of his seven goals in the second half to lead the visiting Lycoming Warriors to a 10-9 win over the Geneseo men's lacrosse team in the Blue Knights season opener at Monroe Community College this afternoon. First year attack Steven Cregan had two goals and four assists to lead Geneseo, senior attack Brendan Kurpis added three scores and junior midfield Tim Burgess collected a pair of goals. Geneseo jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one quarter of play as Kurpis scored with one second left in the frame and Cregan netted the opening goal and assisted on scores by Brent Doerflein and Kurpis. The Blue Knights led 6-3 at the intermission as Romano got his only goal of the first half with 27 seconds to play to cut the deficit to three. In the third quarter, Romano scored all four goals of the period as the Warriors took a 7-6 lead. Cregan's second of the game just 1:04 into the final period tied the game, but the Warriors took a 9-7 lead with goals by Romano with 12:00 to play and sophomore Brett Farrell netted his second of the game with 8:35 to go. Kurpis cut the lead to 9-8 with 5:54 to play, but Romano sealed the win with his seventh with 4:08 to go. Burgess scored with 10 seconds to play to make the final. Geneseo controlled the shots, 37-21, recovered 27 groundballs to 22 by Lycoming and junior Frank DiSanti won 12 of 21 faceoffs. Lycoming was 2-7 with the man advantage, while Geneseo went 0-3. Sophomore Ryan Zaremba made three saves in taking the loss in nets. Geneseo takes on Nazareth College on Saturday at Monroe Community College at 1 p.m.
