Junior midfielder Lea Paris scored four goals and sophomore attack Caroline Buonocore collected three goals and one assist to lead the visiting Geneseo women's lacrosse team to a season-opening 17-13 win over the Rowan Profs (1-2) this afternoon. First year attack Katey Hart added three goals, sophomore midfielder Emily Haggerty had two goals, one assist and six draw controls and junior midfielder Rachel Petrone combined two goals, one assist and four draw controls for the Blue Knights. Geneseo broke open a close game in the first half when Buonocore scored twice and Paris once over a span of 1:12 to give Geneseo an 8-4 lead with 2:39 to play. Rowan cut the lead to 8-6 at the intermission with a score at the 29:59 mark of the period. In the second half, Rowan scored three consecutive goals over a 5:10 span to cut Geneseo's lead to 11-10, but the Blue Knights notched six of the next seven goals to take command of the game at 17-11 with 8:11 to play, including Petrone's two scores. Junior Julie Bernatzky made 10 saves and scooped four groundballs to post the win in nets, senior defender Christine Morra collected three groundballs and senior Kim Magee and sophomores Kylie Caesar and Meredith Weber scored one goal each. Geneseo travels to Rochester on Saturday.
