Tuesday's Contest Summaries

Women's Tennis

Seniors Monica Vieth and Julia Passik combined to win 8-5 at first doubles and each won their singles match to pace the host Geneseo women's tennis team past the Roberts Wesleyan Raiders, 9-0. Vieth won first singles, 6-2, 10-5 and Passik took third singles, 3-6, 10-5, 10-7. In other doubles matches, seniors Katie Gayvert and Reggie Connelly combined to win second doubles, 8-1 and Katie Talbot and Zakkiyah Abdus-Salaam won at third, 8-0. First year Dexuan Yuan won second singles, 3-6, 10-8, 10-5, first year Amanda Rosati won fourth singles, 6-2, 6-4, junior Sarah Shields captured fifth singles, 6-1, 6-1 and Talbot won sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0. The Blue Knights are 12-1 on the season and will travel to NYU on Saturday, April 14.

Women's Lacrosse

Fredonia's Amy Simon scored her seventh goal of the game off Katie Kleine's sixth assist at the 36 second mark of the third overtime to give the visiting Blue Devils a 15-14 win over the Geneseo women's lacrosse team this afternoon. Kleine finished with three goals and nine points to lead Fredonia, Karli Brinthaupt collected three goals and Megan Mietelski scooped four groundballs. Junior Rachel Petrone scored four goals and two assists with five groundballs and three draw controls to lead Geneseo and classmate Lea Paris added three goals and one assist. Sophomore Meredith Weber and first year Katey Hart had two goals and one assist for the Blue Knights, sophomore Emily Haggerty added one goal, two assists and three draws. Geneseo led 3-1 with 19:26 left in the first when the Blue Devils erupted for four straight scores to take a 6-3 lead. Paris scored from Petrone with only 1:24 remaining in the half to draw Geneseo within one at the intermission, 6-5. Both teams turned up the offense in the second half and when Geneseo scored four of five goals in a six-minute span, the Blue Knights led 11-9 with 7:54 to play. Simon responded with a pair of goals assisted by Kleine in 35 seconds to tie the game with 5:57 left. The teams traded goals in the final four minutes with Brinthaupt getting the equalizer for Fredonia with 2:15 in regulation to tie the game at 12. In the first of two mandatory three-minute overtime periods, Fredonia took a 13-12 lead before a goal by Paris with 1:13 left in the first and one by Petrone with 18 ticks left gave Geneseo a 14-13 lead. Brinthaupt netted a free position goal just 43 seconds into the second overtime to score the lone goal of the second overtime and send the game into sudden victory third extra session. Mietelski collected the draw control and the Blue Devils scored quickly to end the contest. Fredonia's Casey Chiesa made 14 saves in posting the win in nets, while junior Julie Bernatzky stopped 11 shots in the hard-luck loss. Geneseo controlled the shots 35-29 and Fredonia won 17 draws to 16 for the Blue Knights. Geneseo falls to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in SUNYAC and travels to Potsdam on Saturday.
