SUNY Geneseo is pleased to announce the hiring of Michelle Walsh as associate athletic director.
Walsh replaces Michael Mooney, who was promoted to Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation in May of 2011.
Walsh comes to Geneseo after spending four years as the senior woman administrator and coordinator of compliance and student-athlete welfare at Fitchburg State University in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
"Michelle is a highly intelligent, critical thinker, who brings a wealth of experiences to this position," Mooney said. "We are very excited to have an individual of her caliber join our staff."
At Fitchburg, Walsh assisted with department strategic planning and implementation, worked as the primary compliance officer, and served as the liaison to the Development and Admissions offices. In addition, she aided in budget management, served as the advisor to the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC), ran CHAMPS/Life Skills education and coordinated the academic monitoring program.
A native of Wakefield, Massachusetts, Walsh earned her bachelor's degree in engineering from Swarthmore College in 1998, secured a master's degree in exercise and sport studies from Smith College in 2006 and earned a second master's in business administration from Fitchburg in 2011.
While at Smith College, Walsh served as a graduate assistant coach for the Pioneers' women's basketball program prior to spending one year at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, where she was the head women's basketball coach and facilities coordinator.
"I'm very excited to join the athletic department at SUNY Geneseo," Walsh said. "The student-athletes at Geneseo represent the best that Division III has to offer; excellence in the classroom, in the playing arena, and as civic-minded members of the community. I'm looking forward to working alongside the dedicated administrators, coaches, faculty, and other staff members as we strive to create an outstanding student-athlete experience."
