Women's Field Hockey
Sophomore Brianne Campagna scored the eventual game-winning goal on a backhand shot from 12 yards out as the Geneseo women's field hockey team defeated the host Utica Pioneers (4-2) for just the second time in 10 tries all-time, 3-2. Utica took a 1-0 lead at 7:34, but the Blue Knights answered with a pair of scores in the first half. Junior Kayla DeAngelis, who set a school mark with 17 goals in 2011, got her second of the season on a breakaway at 16:30 to tie the game. Junior Kerry Hosford netted her team-high third of the year at 25:20 on a penalty corner play as junior Katie Farley claimed the assist. In the second half, Campagna got her goal at 38:38 to give Geneseo a 3-1 lead, but Utica responded with a rebound goal at 42:02. The Geneseo defense held the Pioneers to just five shots and six corners for the game as they held the one goal advantage over the final 28 minutes. Geneseo took 10 shots and eight corners on offense, while first year Dayna Mercer got her first start and picked up her first career win by making three saves. Geneseo moves to 2-3 on the season and hosts the Brockport Golden Eagles in the SUNYAC opener on Friday at 4 p.m.
First year Mare Santos won 6-1, 6-1 at first singles and teamed with senior Katie Talbot to win first doubles, 8-0, in leading the visiting Geneseo women's tennis team to a 9-0 blanking of Fredonia (3-1). Sophomores Dexuan and Minxuan Yuan teamed to win second doubles, 8-3, and sophomores Amanda Rosati and Zakiyyah Abdus-Salaam combined to win 8-0 at third doubles. At second singles, Dexuan Yuan won all 12 games, Talbot captured third singles, 6-2, 6-0, Rosati won fourth singles, 6-2, 6-2, Abdus-Salaam took fifth singles, 6-1, 6-0 and Minxuan Yuan won at #6 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Geneseo moves to 5-1 on the season and hosts Rochester on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
