Men's Soccer

The Geneseo men's soccer team scored a late goal in the first half, an early goal in the second half and withstood several late scoring chances in defeating the visiting Cortland Red Dragons (6-7-1/4-3-1 SUNYAC) this afternoon, 2-1. Cortland controlled much of the early play but sophomore Jason Falk came off the bench late in the first half and fed a through ball up the right side to sophomore Rich Bellusci, who touched the ball past a defender and then past the goalkeeper and shot into the open net from two yards out on the right post at 43:49. In the early stages of the second half, Geneseo sent a dangerous ball to the left side of the penalty area, where Cortland goalie Tim Beauvais made a sliding play on the ball, but slid outside the area and was called for a handball. On the direct kick, junior Pat Lynch sent a ball into the middle, where junior Mat Rough headed the ball inside the left post for a 2-0 Geneseo lead at 56:12. In the final 10 minutes, Cortland pushed forward and got their goal on a scramble in front as Chris McBride collected the loose ball inside the defenders and Geneseo goalie Nick Voggel and shot into the open net from three yards out at 82:21. The Red Dragons continued to apply pressure and their final quality scoring chance from the top right of the penalty area hit the inside of the left post and bounced out before being cleared with nearly four minutes left. Voggel stopped four shots to earn the win as the Blue Knights advance to 4-8-2 overall and 2-4-1 in SUNYAC. Geneseo travels to Plattsburgh on Friday.

Women's Soccer

Senior Shannon Spusta scored at 57:20 to tie the contest on an assist from junior Kelly Quinn as the Geneseo women's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with host Cortland (8-3-4/5-1-2 SUNYAC). Cortland scored 53 seconds into the second half on a corner kick header, but Spusta's shot from the left side found the inside of the right post for the equalizer. Cortland won the shot battle at 21-8 and the corner kicks at 10-2, but the Blue Knights were able to gain the tie as junior Julia Sanger made two saves. Geneseo moves to 1-9-3 overall and 1-4-2 in SUNYAC and hosts Plattsburgh on Friday at 3 p.m.

Men's Cross Country

Seniors Alex Brimstein and Tom Clark finished fourth (24:11) and fifth (24:15), respectively, to lead the Geneseo men's cross country squad, currently ranked fifth nationally, to the team title at the Oberlin Inter-Regional Rumble this afternoon as the Blue Knights scored 55 points to finish ahead of NYU's 85 points as 32 teams competed. Senior Chris Mateer was 12th in 24:24, sophomore Ryan Moynihan ran 15th in 24:41 and senior Chris Moore placed 19th in 24:50 to complete the scoring runners. The top seven included senior Chris Carter, who was 27th in 25:03 and junior Patrick Wortner, who finished 30th in 25:06. The Blue Knights had a mere 55 second gap between runners one and seven. Geneseo has next week off before competing at the SUNYAC Championships at Fredonia on Saturday, October 27.

Women's Cross Country

The Geneseo women's cross country team, currently ranked #9 nationally, scored 90 points to finish in second place to host and 14th-ranked Oberlin's 65 points at the Inter-Regional Rumble this afternoon. Sophomore Cassie Goodman paced Geneseo by finishing ninth in a time of 21:45, while senior Emily Sullivan ran 16th in 22:01. The scoring group included junior Mary Aldridge, who was 21st in 22:07, senior Brigid Heenan, who was 23rd in 22:12 and sophomore Alyssa Knott, who was 25th in 22:18. Geneseo saw senior Esther Lok run a 29th place time of 22:23 and senior Cailin Kowalewski pace a 31st place time of 22:25 as the women's 1-7 gap was a slender 45 seconds. The Blue Knights next compete at the SUNYAC Championships at Fredonia on Saturday, October 27.
