New Paltz, N.Y. – The Geneseo field hockey team (12-5, 5-1 SUNYAC) opens postseason play Friday at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship Tournament at New Paltz. The second-seeded Blue Knights face third-seeded Cortland (8-7, 4-2 SUNYAC) at 1:30 p.m. in Friday’s second semifinal, with top-seeded New Paltz (15-4, 5-1 SUNYAC) taking on fourth-seeded Oneonta (12-6, 3-3 SUNYAC) at 11 a.m. in the first semifinal. Geneseo and New Paltz tied for first place in the SUNYAC regular-season standings with the Hawks earning the top seed in the conference playoffs by virtue of their 2-0 head-to-head win.
The Blue Knights beat both Cortland and Oneonta in overtime (2-1 and 1-0, respectively).
The winner of this weekend’s SUNYAC Championship Tournament earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. The Blue Knights remain fifth in the NCAA North Atlantic Region rankings, which are based on the same criteria used to select and seed teams for the NCAA playoffs.
