Six Field Hockey Players Named All-SUNYAC

Cortland, N.Y. – Six members of the Geneseo field hockey (12-6, 5-1 SUNYAC) have been named to the State University of Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) all-star team, including first year Dayna Mercer (Katonah/John Jay), who was selected the league’s Rookie of the Year. Only one team had more all-conference picks.

Senior defenders Rachel Atkins (Clarence/Clarence), Katie Gallo (Sayville/Sayville) and Alyson Tarney (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and junior defender Bridget McGovern (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) all earned first-team honors with Mercer and junior forward Kayla DeAngelis (Liverpool/Liverpool) picking up second-team recognition.

Mercer is the third Blue Knight to earn the Rookie of the Year award in the past eight years. She led the conference with a 0.97 goals-against average while her .772 save percentage and four shutouts both ranked second in the SUNYAC. Mercer started 14 games in goal, posting an 11-3 record.

Atkins scored eight points (three goals, two assists) while playing in every game. Two of her goals were game-winners. She raised her career total to 18 points (six goals, six assists).  McGovern led the Blue Knights with five defensive saves and contributed three goals. In 57 games over her three-year career, she’s scored 29 points (13 goals, three assists), good for 15th on the program’s all-time list.

Gallo and Tarney both started every game, helping anchor a defense that allowed just 10 shots per game. DeAngelis was Geneseo’s leading scorer, collecting 25 points on 10 goals and five assists. She also led the team with three game-winning goals. DeAngelis has scored 75 points (31 goals, 13 assists) in 58 games over the past three seasons. She ranks third among Geneseo’s all-time leaders in both points and goals and stands sixth in assists.

The Blue Knights reached the SUNYAC playoffs and their 12 wins were the program’s second-highest total. Geneseo’s four winningest seasons have come in the past four years.
