Women's Cross Country Headed To NCAA Championships

Rochester, N.Y. – The Geneseo women’s cross country team clinched its 19th trip to the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish at Saturday’s NCAA Atlantic Regional. Senior Cailin Kowalewski (Fredonia/Fredonia) led the Blue Knights, placing 16th in the 277-runner field.

Geneseo, ranked 12th nationally, took second of 39 teams to earn a berth at next Saturday’s NCAA Cross Country Championships, held at LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The Blue Knights will be making their 14th consecutive appearance at nationals, where they’ve recorded seven top-10 finishes (including winning the 2005 NCAA title).

Kowalewski, who finished in 22:32.7, was one of three Geneseo runners to earn all-reagion recognition (awarded to the top 35 finishers). Sophomore Cassie Goodman (Phelps/Midlakes) placed 20th in 22:37.9 and junior Mary Aldridge (Rochester/Brighton) took 31st in a time of 22:54.4. Senior Brigid Heenan (Liverpool/Liverpool) finished 36th in 23:01.9 and junior Rebekah Steiinke (Lima/Honeoye Falls-Lima) was 23:02.1. Rounding out Geneseo’s top seven were sophomore Alyssa Knott (Smithtown/West) and first year Ashton Hughes (Fairport/Fairport) with respective times of 23:03.1 and 23:35.0.
