Geneseo Hands #4 Plattsburgh First Ice Hockey Loss

GENESEO, N.Y. – The Geneseo ice hockey team (4-4-1, 3-2-1 SUNYAC) snapped a three-game losing streak Friday, beating #4 Plattsburgh (5-1-0, 4-1-0 SUNYAC) 3-2 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game.

First year Devon Rice (Ottawa, Ont./Ottawa Junior Senators) scored the game-winning goal with just 57 seconds left in regulation after the previously undefeated Cardinals had fought back from a 2-0 deficit.

Rice’s goal – the first of his career – came off an assist by first year Alex Lubczuk (Kitchener, Ont./Georgetown Raiders) after a scramble in front of the net.

The Ice Knights had taken a 2-0 lead early in the second period. Senior Ryan Bulach (Kelowna, B.C./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) gave Geneseo a 1-0 lead on his fourth goal of the season, putting in a rebound after a pad save on a shot by junior Zachary Vit (Villanova, Pa./Green Mountain Glades) midway through the opening period. Sophomore Jack Caradonna (Markham, Ont./Stouffville Spirit) also assisted on the goal; he and Vit both have a team-best seven assists.

A goal by Jonathan Sucese (Fairport/Northfield Mount Hermon) put the Knights up 2-0 3:12 into the second period. Senior Blake O’Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Bay State Breakers) won a face-off in the Cardinal zone leading to a shot by senior Blake O’Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Bay State Breakers) that was saved. Sucese converted the rebound for his first goal of the season.

Sophomore Bryan Haude (Hilton/Hartford Wolfpack) earned the win with 14 saves in relief of senior Adrian Rubeniuk (Grandview, Man./Dauphin Kings). Rubeniuk stopped all nine shots he faced before leaving the game early in the second period.

The Ice Knights close out their six-game home stand Saturday with a 7 p.m. conference game against Potsdam.
