Chili, N.Y. – The Geneseo men’s basketball team (3-3) snapped a
two-game losing streak, beating Rochester Institute of Technology (1-3) 67-58
in Saturday’s seventh/eighth-place game of the Wendy’s College Classic.
Sophomores Andy Drescher (Fayetteville/Christian Brothers Academy) and Devon Anderson (Plattsburgh/Beekmantown), both first-time starters, combined for 33 points to lead the Blue Knights. Drescher scored a career-best 20 points, including four three-point baskets, and Anderson recorded 13 points and four rebounds.
Junior guard Thomas Decker (White Plains/Archbishop Stepanic) added seven points and three rebounds; he and junior guard Connor Fedge (Bellport/Bellport) led Geneseo with four assists. Junior forward Matt Curry (Greenlawn/Harborfields) scored nine points in 13 minutes off the bench.
Drescher made three of his three-point baskets in the first three minutes as Geneseo jumped out to a 14-2 lead. The Tigers closed the half on a 12-6 run to pull to within four points at intermission, but the Blue Knights needed just five minutes to reclaim their double-digit lead. RIT scored seven straight points midway through the period to pull to within three points but a lay-up by Anderson and a three pointer by Curry put the Geneseo lead at eight and the Blue Knights pulled away for the win.
Geneseo opens State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play Tuesday, hosting Cortland at 8 p.m.
