Ithaca, N.Y. – The Geneseo
women’s track & field team opened its indoor season Friday at the Cornell
Relays. The Blue Knights recorded eight top-10 finishes at the non-scoring
meet.
Geneseo’s highest finish came from the distance medley relay team that placed
first in 12:25.66. The foursome of senior Cailin Kowalewski (Fredonia/Fredonia),
first year Kylie Ryan (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon), sophomore Keira Wood (Lake
Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) and senior Alyssa Smith (Rochester/Brighton) qualified
for the ECAC Championships with their performance.
Wood also turned in an ECAC-qualifying showing in the 500-meter dash, placing
seventh in 1:18.38.
In the 3,000-meter run, Smith and Kowalewski were ECAC qualifiers, placing
fifth and sixth with respective times of 10:26.40 and 10:30.45. First year
Shannon Murphy (Jamestown/Falconer) was eighth in 10:48.16, junior Lauren
McKnight (North Massapequa/Farmingdale) finished 13th in 10:59.95 and first
year Ashton Hughes (Fairport/Fairport) took 14th in 11:08.06.
Six Blue Knights finished in the top 20 in the 5,000-meter run. Senior Danae
Polsin (Baldwinsville/Baker) was fifth in 18:40.21 and junior Rebekah Steinke (Lima/Honeoye
Falls-Lima) took sixth in 18:42.51; both times were ECAC qualifying marks.
Junior Erin Dorset (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished ninth (19:17.55),
sophomore Laura Szczesniak (Whitesboro/Whitesboro) was 10th (19:22.46), first
year Ellie Trelstad (White Plains/White Plains) placed 16th (20:05.17) and
sophomore Jolie Siegal (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) took 20th (20:15.07).
Geneseo placed 16th in the 1,600-meter dash with the quartet of first years Brianna
VanSoest (Alpine/Trumansburg), Rachel Bruce (Ithaca/Lansing), Hughes and
Stephanie Newman (West Seneca/Mount Mercy Academy) recording a time of 4:27.94.
The Blue Knights compete at RIT’s Early Season Open Thursday.
