Blue Knights Take Sixth at Ithaca Meet in Men's Swimming & Diving

Ithaca, N.Y. – The Geneseo men’s swimming & diving team placed sixth at Ithaca’s Bomber Invitational. The Blue Knights were fourth among Division III schools at the 11-team meet.

First year Yonghoon Jun (Nanuet/Tappan Zee) posted the team’s highest finish, placing fifth in the 100-yard butterfly. His time of 51.96 bettered the previous pool record. Jun also finished 10th in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:58.01.

The Blue Knights recorded 12 other top-10 performances, including two each by first year Kristian Tialios (Mount Tremper/Onteora), sophomore John Nasky (Rochester/Brighton), senior Frank Schiappa (East Amherst/Canisius) and junior Brandon Peifer (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury).

Tialios took sixth in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.43) and eighth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:19.63). Nasky was eighth in both the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.63) and 1,650-yard freestyle (16:38.39). Schiappa placed seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (47.33) and 10th in the 50-yard freestyle (21.59).

Peifer was ninth in the 3-meter diving and 10th in the 1-meter competition, posting scores of 405.15 and 372.65, respectively.

Sophomore Kenneth Athans (Victor/Victor) was ninth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:20.47).

All five Geneseo relays placed in the top 10 as well. The 400-yard freestyle quartet of Schiappa, Athans, Tialios and Jun took seventh in 3:14.56. The same foursome comprised the 400-yard medley relay team that placed eighth in 3:37.51. The Blue Knights also placed eighth in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with Schiappa, Jun, senior Austin Brennan (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) and Athans finishing in 1:27.87.
Athans, Jun, first year Ben Greenspan (Williamsville/Williamsville South) and Schiappa made up the 800-yard freestyle relay team that was ninth in 7:19.49. In the 200-yard medley relay, Geneseo finished ninth with Tialios, first year Justin Ongkingco (Watertown/Watertown), Jun and Schiappa recording a time of 1:39.24.

Tialios and Athans were 11th and 13th in the 200-yard individual medley with respective times of 1:59.76 and 1:59.96. In the 400-yard individual medley, sophomore Bryan Schaub (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) was 11th in 4:22.49 with Nasky 17th in 4:27.92 and junior Paul Jennings (East Northport/John Glenn) coming in 24th with a time of 4:35.01.

Schaub finished 16th in the 200-yard butterfly with first year Andrew Schunk () 20th in 2:02.72 and Athans 24th in 2:04.36. Brennan and Schunk also scored in the 100-yard butterfly; Brennan was 15th in 54.37 and Schunk placed 24th in 56.05.

In the 100-yard backstroke Brennan finished 14th in 55.38 and sophomore Branden Dahlem (Rhinebeck/Our Lady of Lourdes) took 17th in a time of 55.56. They were 14th and 17th in the 200-yard backstroke with respective times of 2:01.42 and 2:02.21.

Senior Greg Marks (Phelps/Midlakes) placed 13th in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:18.40 and Ongkingco finished 20th in 2:22.87.

Greenspan was 16th in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:28.86) and sophomore Donald McLoughlin (Waccabuc/John Jay) placed 24th (18:06.73).

Jun and Greenspan contributed top-20 finishes in the 100-yard freestyle (48.62) and 500-yard freestyle (4:56.56).

Geneseo returns to action Saturday with a 1 p.m. meet at Canisius.
