Women's Basketball Drops Cortland 54-41

Cortland, N.Y. – The Geneseo women’s basketball team (10-4. 6-2 SUNYAC) posted a 54-41 win over host Cortland (5-8, 3-4 SUNYAC) Friday in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. The win marked the seventh time in 14 games that the Knights have held an opponent under 45 points.

Geneseo pulled away from a three-point half-time lead and led by as many as 20 points in the second period. Sophomore forward Katie Peterson (Ithaca/Ithaca) scored five straight points to spark an 8-0 run that put the Knights up 33-22 early in the second half. After the Red Dragons pulled to within single digits, cutting Geneseo’s lead to 38-29 with 12:56 remaining in regulation, the Knights used a 13-2 run over the next 6:25 to seal the win.

Senior guard Melissa Graham (Orchard Park/Mount Mercy) scored 16 points, pulled down nine rebounds and blocked a pair of shots. First year forward Allison McKenna (Huntington/John Glenn) added 10 points and five rebounds and sophomore forward Shannon McGinnis (Walworth/Gananda) added eight points and collected a game-high 13 rebounds. Peterson finished with seven rebounds.

The Knights, who rank seventh nationally in rebound margin, posted a 52-34 advantage on the boards.

Geneseo returns home for a 6 p.m. game against Oswego Saturday. The Lakers (12-2, 6-1 SUNYAC) are half a game ahead of the Knights for second place in the conference standings.
