Geneseo Blanks Fredonia For 5-0 Ice Hockey Win

GENESEO, N.Y. – The Geneseo ice hockey team (11-5-1, 7-1-1 SUNYAC), ranked 19th by and 20th by, won for the eighth time in nine games, beating visiting Fredonia (5-12-1, 3-6-0 SUNYAC) in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Friday.

The Knights killed off nine minutes of Blue Devil power play opportunities and scored on their only man advantage (Geneseo has the SUNYAC’s top-ranked combined special teams unit) and netted three goals in the final 105 seconds.

First year forward David Ripple (Winter Springs, Fla./Coulee Region Chill) scored three points, recording the game’s first two goals six minutes apart in the second period. He collected his second power play goal of the season 9:39 in with first year defenseman Nate Brown (Bethel, Pa./Bay State Breakers) and senior forward Kaz Iwamoto (Tomakomai, Japan/Wyoming Seminary) assisting on the play. Ripple notched his fifth goal of the year with 4:05 left in the second, converting passes from first year forward Ryan Donnelly (Stittsville, Ont./Kanata Stallions) and Brown.

Senior Adrian Rubeniuk (Grandview, Man./Dauphin Kings), making his first appearance since Nov. 17, stopped all 27 Fredonia shots for his second career shutout. The Knights have recorded three shutouts in their last six games, outscoring the opposition 22-6 in that stretch. Rubeniuk made six of his saves on Fredonia power plays, including four stops during a five-minute Blue Devil advantage in the third period.

The Knights broke open the game with three goals – including two empty-net scores – in the games’ last two minutes.

Sophomore forward Tyler Brickler (Riverwoods, Ill./UMass-Lowell) and senior forward Corbin Rosmarin (Rexford/Northern Cyclones) collected empty net goals just 10 seconds apart and first year forward Brent Bisdee (Ottawa, Ont./Georgetown Raiders) converted a long slap shot with 37 seconds to go.

Iwamoto and sophomore defenseman Jack Caradonna (Markham, Ont./Stouffville Spirit) assisted on Rosmarin’s goal. Iwamoto raised his season total to 10; Caradonna, the team’s leading scorer, now has 15 points and 17 assists.

Senior defensemen Blake O’Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Bay State Breakers) and Colin de Jersey (West Vancouver, B.C./Burnaby Express) picked up the assists on Brickler’s empty-netter; O’Connor’s was his first of the season. de Jersey and Ripple assisted on Bisdee's goal.

The Knights close out their weekend series with a 7 p.m. game against Buffalo State Saturday.
