GENESEO, N.Y. – The Geneseo men’s basketball team (14-7,
10-4 SUNYAC) dropped a 71-70 decision to visiting Brockport (13-8, 8-6 SUNYAC)
Saturday as the visiting Golden Eagles converted two free throws with 2.2
The back-and-forth second half featured six lead changes in the final 2:44 and saw the Knights rally from a 10-point deficit.
Geneseo’s last lead – 70-69 – came from a layup by junior guard Connor Fedge (Bellport/Bellport) with 11 seconds left. After Brockport’s decisive free throws, the Knights had a shot at a game-winning basket but a long three-point attempt was off the mark.
The Knights’ rally from 53-43 down with 10:48 left was sparked by free-throw shooting as they went nine-for-12 from the line. Sophomore guard Andy Drescher (Christian Brothers Academy/Fayetteville) hit a three-pointer with 2:44 left as Geneseo took the lead for the first time since midway through the first period. The Golden Eagles answered with a three-point basket on their next possession, then used another three-pointer to retake the lead after Geneseo went back in front on a lay-up by sophomore forward James McKenna (Huntington/St. Anthony’s).
Fedge finished with 19 points (one short of his career high) and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Gordon Lyons (Canisius/Amherst) collected his seventh double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. He added three assists, matching a career high. Drescher scored 12 points off the bench and senior forward Ryan Riefenhauser (Dobbs Ferry/Dobbs Ferry) added 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Knights return to action Friday with an 8 p.m. game at Potsdam.
