Two Titlists For Men's Track & Field at SUNYAC Championships

Brockport, N.Y. – The Geneseo men’s track & field team posted a fifth-place finish at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships Saturday. The Knights crowned two champions at the eight-team competition, scoring 76.5 points.

Senior Alex Brimstein (Webster/Webster-Thomas) won the mile run in 4:11.96 – the program’s second-fastest time ever. Brimstein’s winning time broke the facility record and met the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships qualifying standard.

Senior Chris Carter (Grand Island/Grand Island) won his second straight SUNYAC title in the 800-meter run, recording a winning time of 1:55.70. Three other Knights scored in the final; junior Tony George (West Seneca/West Seneca West) placed third in 1:56.89, sophomore Billy Gabriel (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished seventh in 1:58.48 and junior Nathaniel DeBoever (West Hurley/Onteora) was eighth in 1:58.63. Carter and George both qualified for the ECAC Championships.

Geneseo collected three runner-up finishes. Sophomore Luke Taverne (Vernon/Westmoreland) cleared 1.93 meters (6-4) in the high jump, posting another ECAC mark. He was joined in the final by first year Adrian Bergere (Bethlehem/Delmar) and sophomore Phil Longo (Dansville/Dansville), who finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Both cleared 1.83 meters (6-0).

Sophomore Cohen Miles-Rath placed second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:10.48. Junior Patrick Wortner (Dobbs Ferry/Dobbs Ferry) also scored in that event, finishing eighth in 15:37.44.

The Knights took second in the distance medley relay with the foursome of Brimstein, first year Andrew Hayes (Hamburg/St. Francis), sophomore Christian Igielinski (Perrysburg/Gowanda) and Miles-Rath finishing in 10:21.90, an ECAC-qualifying time that bettered the previous meet and facility records.

Senior Mike Mattiucci (Webster/Webster-Thomas) was third in the 3,000-meter run in an ECAC-qualifying time of 8:45.50 and first year Brendan Wortner (Dobbs Ferry/Dobbs Ferry) took seventh in 8:53.16.

Geneseo also notched a third-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay, finishing in an ECAC-qualifying time of 3:27.15. Sophomore Benjamin Schwartz (Cortlandt Manor/Hendrick Hudson), George, Carter and senior Jesse Cleary-Krell (Syracuse/Westhill) made up the quartet.

Rounding out the Knights’ scorers were junior Liam Collins (Troy/Averill Park) and senior Brendan Murphy (Katonah/Iona Prep), who both contributed seventh-place finishes. Collins posted a mark of 13.44 meters (44-1 1/4) in the triple jump and Murphy threw the 35-poune weight 14.72 meters (48-3 1/2).
