Buffalo, N.Y. – The Geneseo women’s swimming & diving
team won its sixth consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference
(SUNYAC) title Saturday, concluding the three-day meet with 772 points.
The Knights, who have won 21 titles overall, topped runner-up Cortland (586
points) in the nine-team standings.
Geneseo has now claimed four of the 13 SUNYAC titles awarded this year after
capturing conference titles in men’s cross country, women’s cross country and
women’s tennis.
Five NCAA “B” cuts and a pair of event titles highlighted Geneseo’s Saturday
efforts.
Junior Kaitlin Wilcoxen (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) won her third straight
SUNYAC title in the 200-yard breaststroke with an NCAA “B” cut time of 2:20.64.
In the preliminaries she set a meet and conference record of 2:19.95. Three
other Knights joined her in the final. Sophomore Eileen Goralski (Queensbury/Queensbury)
was second in 2:25.80, senior Erin Dewey (Albany/Guilderland) finished seventh
in 2:31.65 and sophomore Katherine Jesaitis (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) took
eighth in 2:33.44.
Geneseo’s other win came in the final event of the meet. The 400-yard freestyle
relay team of sophomore Haleigh Wixson (Montour Falls/Watkins Glen), first year
Julie Holloway (Pittsford/Rush-Henrietta), senior Elyssa Max (New Hartford/New
Hartford) and sophomore Abby Max (New Hartford/New Hartford) won with an NCAA-qualifying
time of 3:30.85.
Abby Max posted an NCAA “B” cut in the 200-yard backstroke, placing second in
2:04.65. Junior Lauren Boyce (New Hartford/New Hartford) was seventh in 2:11.66
and first year Betsy Erickson (Elma/Iroquois) finished 11th in 2:13.71.
Wixson was the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle with an
NCAA “B” time of 52.15. Elyssa Max finished sixth in 53.70 and Holloway placed
10th in 54.55.
Six Knights scored in the 200-yard butterfly, paced by Powell’s runner-up
performance in an NCAA qualifying time of 2:08.17. Sophomore Kristen Bormann (Farmingdale/Half
Hollow Hills East) finished fifth in 2:12.93 and junior Molly Carney (Chenango
Forks/Chenango Forks) took seventh in 2:14.17.
In the consolation final, first year Hailey Modelewski (Northport/Northport)
was ninth (2:13.63), first year Jenna Gibbons (Staten Island/Staten Island Tech)
placed 11th in 2:15.18 and junior Corrine
Vairo (Poquott/Ward Melville) finished 13th (2:18.25).
In the 1-meter diving, junior Emily Wanamaker (Camillus/Christian Brothers Academy)
placed sixth (388.55).
Junior Erin O’Brien (Lansing/Lansing) was Geneseo’s top performer in the 1,650-yard
freestyle, placing 13th in 18:36.10.
