Humacao, Puerto Rico – The Geneseo women’s tennis team (10-1) opened its spring season with a 9-0 win over Division II Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. The Knights won all nine matches, including five straight-set singles victories.
Sophomore Zakiyyah Abdus-Salaam (Mount Vernon/The Ursuline School) remained
unbeaten on the season, posting a straight-set win at fifth singles and teaming
with sophomore Minxuan Yuan (Flushing/Benjamin Cardozo) to win at third
doubles. Abdus-Salaam is now 13-0 on the season (9-0 in singles and 4-0 in
doubles).
First year Marylen Santos (Jamaica/St. Francis Prep) and senior Katie Talbot (Endwell/Maine-Endwell)
raised their first doubles record to 10-1. Santos swept her first singles
opponent and Talbot won in a second singles bout that was decided by a 14-12
third set.
Sophomore Amanda Rosati (Albany/Academy of the Holy Names) and senior Sarah
Shields (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) stayed perfect at second doubles,
winning 8-5 to up their season mark to 6-0. Both were straight-set singles
winners as well, with Rosati winning at third singles and Shields posting a
victory at fourth singles.
The Knights continue their spring break trip, facing Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Tuesday morning.
