Clermont, Fla. – The Geneseo softball team (2-4) split a
pair of games to open its spring trip, knocking off #30 Amherst (2-2) 10-8 and
losing 7-6 to Lawrence (3-3).
In Monday’s opener against Amherst, the Knights scored four sixth-inning runs to take the lead for good then held off a Lord Jeffs’ rally; Amherst scored three times in the bottom of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate before Geneseo retired three straight batters for the win.
The top of Geneseo’s order – sophomore catcher Ashley Fillmore (Getzville/Williamsville North), first year shortstop Samantha Brown (Canton/Hugh C. Williams) and junior Samantha Trapasso (Garden City/Garden City) – combined for eight of the Knights’ 13 hits and drove in nine of their 10 runs.
Fillmore went four for five and helped spark Geneseo’s sixth-inning outburst, singling in the tying run. Sophomore second baseman Jenna Reilley (Williamsville/East) started the rally with a one-out pinch-hit single and after sophomore left fielder Abby Weiss (Hamburg/Hamburg) reached on an infield error, Fillmore singled to tie the score at 5-5. Brown singled to put the Knights up for good and Trapasso followed with a two-run double.
Geneseo tacked a pair of two-out runs in the seventh. A pinch-hit single by first year Catherine Krok (Buffalo/Williamsville East) and Fillmore’s fourth single of the day set the stage for Brown’s two-run single.
In the bottom of the seventh, singles by the first three Lord Jeffs brought in a run and left Amherst trialing 10-7 with a runner on second. First year Katie Brennan (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) came in to pitch and after allowing an RBI single, she shut the Lord Jeffs down on a pair of infield ground-outs and a strikeout for her first career save.
Sophomore Corrin Spallone (Greece/Greece Arcadia) earned the win in relief.
Geneseo scored a run in each of the first four innings. Fillmore led off the first with a single and came around on Trapasso's one-out double. An inning later Fillmore singled home sophomore outfielder Kayleigh Blersch (Lancaster/Lancaster), who’d led off with a double.
Trapasso drew a lead-off walk in the third and scored three batters later on a two-out single by junior third baseman Elise Porreca (Lancaster/Lancaster) to put the Knights ahead 3-1. After the Lord Jeffs took their first lead with three third-inning runs, Geneseo tied the score on a run-scoring groundout by Brown that brought in sophomore Katie Muller (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius).
Lawrence erased a 5-0 Geneseo lead in Monday’s second game, taking a 7-6 lead into the bottom of the seventh. The Knights put the tying run on third and the winning run on second with one out before the Vikings escaped with the win.
Brown singled with one out and Trapasso drew a walk. Brown and pinch-runner Melissa Mastoridis (New Hyde Park/New Hyde Park Memorial) executed a double steal but Lawrence induced a pop-up and a strikeout to end the game.
Trapasso and sophomore Jami Cohen (East Amherst/Williamsville East) both hit two-run doubles to highlight Geneseo’s four-run second inning. Cohen drove in Reilley, who reached on an infield error and stole second, and Blersch (who singled). She and Fillmore (who singled) scored on Trapasso’s double.
Fillmore, Brown and Trapasso each had two hits. Fillmore doubled to lead off the first and scored on a ground-out by Brown.
Trapasso hit her first home run of the season – and the ninth of her career – in the fifth.
