GENESEO, N.Y. --
The Geneseo men's lacrosse team (3-3) dropped a 9-7 decision to visiting St.
Lawrence (4-3) Tuesday. The Knights rallied from a 9-3 deficit in the final six
minutes to pull to within two goals before the Saints escaped with the win.
A 5-1 Saint run over a span of 20:50 covering the third and fourth quarters left St. Lawrence holding a 9-3 advantage with just 5:51 to go. Senior midfielder John Felix (Scarsdale/Scarsdale) started Geneseo’s rally, scoring his first goal of the season just 17 seconds after a Knight face-off win. Just over a minute later, junior goalkeeper Ryan Zaremba (Bay Shore/Army Prep) saved a Saint shot and started a fast-break that ended with senior Kyle Johnson (Long Beach/Long Beach ) scoring his first career goal.
Another face-off win led to an unassisted goal by sophomore attack Andre Keating (Ithaca/Ithaca) 21 seconds later. Keating’s goal, his eighth of the season, came into an empty net after he had faked St. Lawrence’s goalkeeper out of the crease.
The Knights were whistled for a penalty with 89 seconds left in regulation but sophomore attack Steve Cregan (Rochester/Brighton) notched a man-down goal with 56 seconds to go. Geneseo won the ensuing face-off but turned the ball over and the Saints were able to run out the clock.
Cregan scored a pair of goals, giving him 10 on the year and 24 in his 20-game career. Senior midfielder Tim Burgess (Syracuse/Westhill) and first year midfielder Brad Willows (Queensbury/Queensbury) added first-half goals.
Burgess led the team with nine ground balls. Zaremba finished with four saves and three ground balls.
The Knights host Oneonta Saturday at 1 p.m. in their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener.
