GENESEO, N.Y. – The Geneseo softball team (4-10, 0-2 SUNYAC) opened State
University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play Friday, losing a
doubleheader to #25 Plattsburgh (9-5, 2-0 SUNYAC). The Cardinals won the opener
6-1 and rallied for a 5-4 win in game two.
Plattsburgh scored four runs in the final two innings to erase Geneseo’s 4-1 lead in the nightcap, putting three runs on the board in the seventh.
The Knights scored twice in both the third and fourth innings to take their lead. First year shortstop Samantha Brown (Canton/Hugh C. Williams) and junior first baseman Samantha Trapasso (Garden City/Garden City) opened the third with singles. Brown scored on a groundout by senior right fielder Lexi Williams (Waterford/Shenendehowa) and pinch-runner Katie Muller (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) – who had stolen second – came home when senior third baseman Jess Steubing (Fairport/Fairport) pushed a bunt past the Cardinal infield.
An inning later, Williams’ two-out single to left field scored Brown and catcher Ashley Fillmore (Getzville/Williamsville North).
Brown finished with a career-high four hits and Trapasso singled twice.
In game one, Geneseo was held to four hits, including a run-scoring double by Fillmore. Fillmore’s hit drove in Steubing, who had reached on a one-out infield hit.
The Knights host Potsdam Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
