GENESEO, N.Y. – The Geneseo softball team (6-10, 2-2 SUNYAC) snapped a six-game
losing streak Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader from visiting Potsdam in State
University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. The Knights won the
opener 9-1 in five innings and posted a 10-2 win in game two in six.
The Knights pounded out 10 extra-base hits – including three home runs – in the lopsided sweep.
In game one, sophomore center fielder Kayleigh Blersch (Lancaster/Lancaster) went three for three with three runs batted in and sophomore catcher Ashley Fillmore (Getzville/Williamsville North) drove in three runs with a double and a home run.
First year left fielder Mikayla Moore (Stillwater/Stillwater) and Blersch hit consecutive doubles in the bottom of the second to erase Potsdam’s 1-0 lead and give the Knights the lead for good.
Senior right fielder Lexi Williams (Waterford/Shenendehowa) drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the third and Fillmore hit a two-run home run (her first of the season and the fourth of her career) in the fourth.
Geneseo pushed four runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. Williams drew a one-out walk and first year Catherine Krok (Buffalo/Williamsville East) followed with a single. Moore’s run-scoring double brought home Williams and Blersch drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle. Blersch scored the game-ending run on Fillmore’s double to left field.
Senior Katie Gallagher (Gansevoort/Schuylerville) allowed four hits in improving to 2-3. She struck out three Bears.
Williams drove in four runs in the nightcap and four Knights each had two of the team’s 13 hits.
Junior first baseman Samantha Trapasso (Garden City/Garden City) singled in a run and Williams hit a sacrifice fly in Geneseo’s two-run first and an inning later, Blersch hit her first career home run to put the Knights up 3-0.
Williams hit a two-run home run in the third, giving her three this spring and 10 in her career.
First year Katie Brennan (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) drove in first year shortstop Samantha Brown (Canton/Hugh C. Williams) with a pinch-hit double and then scored on a single by senior third baseman Jessica Steubing (Fairport/Fairport) in the fourth and the Knights wrapped up the sweep with three sixth0inning runs.
Sophomore Nicole Zimmerman (Canandaigua/Canandaigua) earned the win, allowing one unearned run over 4.1 innings. She’s now 1-1. Sophomore Corrin Spallone (Greece/Greece Arcadia) closed out the game with 1.2 innings of shutout relief.
The Knights return to action Wednesday with a non-league double header at Rochester.
