#3 Cortland Pulls Away In Match-Up Of Nationally Ranked Women's Lacrosse Teams

Cortland, N.Y. – The #19 Geneseo women's lacrosse team (5-2, 0-1 SUNYAC) lost 14-10 to #3 Cortland in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener for both teams.

The Red Dragons opened the second half with a 5-0 run to secure the win after Geneseo closed the first period on a 3-1 run to take a 5-5 tie into intermission.

Junior attack Caroline Buonocore (Syracuse/Westhill) and sophomore attack Katey Hart (Syracuse/Wet Genesee) led the Knights with four points apiece.

Buonocore finished with two goals and two assists, giving her a team-leading 29 points in 2013 and 173 in her career; she’s two shy of fourth on the program’s all-time list. Hart totaled three goals and an assist and now has 19 points in just five games. She also picked up a team-leading four ground balls.

Junior midfielder Emily Haggerty (Syracuse/Westhill) added three assists and junior midfielder Meredith Weber (Bellport/Bellport) scored a pair of goals.

Hart scored a pair of goals in Geneseo’s first-half run and assisted on a goal by junior midfielder Kylie Caesar (Delmar/Bethlehem) that tied the score at five.

After Cortland’s five-goal spurt to start the second half, first year Liz Felix (Scarsdale/Scarsdale) and Hart scored consecutive goals to pull the Knights to within 10-7 before the Red Dragons put the game out of reach with three straight goals.

Senior Julie Bernatzky (Mount Sinai/Mount Sinai) made 12 saves – including nine in the second half.

The Knights continue conference play Tuesday with a 4 p.m. game at Oswego.
