GENESEO, N.Y. -- The Geneseo men's lacrosse team (4-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) scored nine of the game's first 10 goals and cruised to an 18-8 win over visiting Oneonta (2-6, 0-1 SUNYAC) Saturday. It was the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener for both teams.
Senior midfielder Tim Burgess (Syracuse/Westhill) scored a career-high five
goals and sophomore attack Steve Cregan (Rochester/Brighton) added a
career-best five assists. Sophomore attack Sam Thompson (Queensbury/Queensbury)
posted his second five-goal performance of the season.
Burgess scored four goals in the first 18:39 – including the game’s first score seven seconds in after winning the opening face-off – and has now scored nine goals this spring and 32 in his career.
In his 21st game at Geneseo, Cregan raised his career assist total to 50 to become the 15th Knight to reach that mark.
Thompson matched his career-best total, notching four goals in the second half. He now has a team-best 18 this season.
Senior midfielder John Felix (Scarsdale/Scarsdale) posted career-high marks of two goals and three points and sophomore midfielder Steve Aziz (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt) matched a personal best with a pair of goals.
Junior defenseman Kyle Kerrigan (West Islip/Wes Islip) and junior midfielder Joe Cicio (Northport/Northport) both recorded their first career points on assists.
Junior Ryan Zaremba (Bay Shore/Army Prep) played the first three quarters in goal and stopped 13 of 19 shots – his save total was three short of his career high – while leading Geneseo with a personal-best seven ground balls. Burgess and Cicio both picked up four ground balls; Cregan and senior midfielder Bob Mascia (East Aurora/East Aurora) recorded three apiece.
Senior Michael Greubel (North Merrick/Mepham) and junior Adam Perri (Auburn/Auburn) combined to hold the Red Dragons to two goals in the final quarter.
The Knights play a 4 p.m. game at third-ranked Rochester Institute of Technology Wednesday.
