Knights and Rochester Split Extra-Inning Doubleheader

Rochester, N.Y. – The Geneseo softball team (7-11) held on for a 7-6 extra-inning win at Rochester Thursday, earning a split with the Yellow Jackets. Rochester posted a 3-2 eight-inning win in the opener.

Sophomore catcher Jami Cohen (East Amherst/Williamsville East) doubled in a run during Geneseo’s two-run eighth inning and the Knights added a second run on a groundout by sophomore left fielder Abby Weiss (Hamburg/Hamburg).

The Yellow Jackets scored a run in the bottom of the eighth and put the tying run on second before sophomore Nicole Zimmerman (Canandaigua/Canandaigua) struck out Rochester’s pinch hitter to end the game.

Zimmerman earned the win with four innings of four-hit relief. She struck out five batters.

The Knights took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh on a one-out pinch-hit home run by junior first baseman Samantha Trapasso (Garden City/Garden City) before the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning. A two-out single to right field tied the score but senior right fielder Lexi Williams (Waterford/Shenendehowa) threw out the potential winning run at the plate to force extra innings.

Williams doubled in a pair of runs in Geneseo’s three-run third, then came around to score on an infield error.

Sophomore center fielder Kayleigh Blersch (Lancaster/Lancaster) went three for four. Williams and
sophomore Ashley Fillmore (Getzville/Williamsville North) had two hits apiece.

Trapasso’s home run was her fourth of the season and the 12th of her career.

In game one, the Knights scored in the top of the seventh to tie the game before Rochester won on a walk-off home run leading off the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore shortstop Jenna Reilley (Williamsville/East) reached on an infield error to lead off the inning and one out later Blersch hit a run-scoring double.

Senior first baseman Jessica Steubing (Fairport/Fairport) had two of Geneseo’s seven hits. She doubled in Fillmore in the sixth for Geneseo’s first run.
