New Paltz, N. Y. – The Geneseo softball team (14-12, 7-3 SUNYAC) continued its winning ways, sweeping host New Paltz (15-12, 8-4 SUNYAC) Sunday, beating the Hawks 4-2 and 9-3 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader. The Knights have won 10 of their last 12.
Senior Katie Gallagher (Gansevoort/Schuylerville) and sophomore Corrin Spallone (Greece/Greece Arcadia) recorded complete-game victories. Gallagher improved to 4-3 on the season, allowing two runs on eight hits. She allowed just one hit over the first three innings as the Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
Junior first baseman Samantha Trapasso (Garden City/Garden City) doubled and scored on a single by senior third baseman Jessica Steubing (Fairport/Fairport) to put Geneseo up 1-0 in the first.
An inning later, sophomore Samantha Brown (Canton/Hugh C. Williams) doubled home sophomore catcher Jami Cohen (East Amherst/Williamsville East) and sophomore Ashley Fillmore (Getzville/Williamsville North), who had both singled. Trapasso followed with a run-scoring single for the Knights’ fourth run.
Brown, Trapasso and sophomore center fielder Kayleigh Blersch (Lancaster/Lancaster) each had two hits.
In the nightcap, senior outfielder Lexi Williams (Waterford/Shenendehowa) drove in three runs, Fillmore scored three and Steubing had three hits – including a pair of doubles – to lead Geneseo’s 14-hit attack.
Brown and Trapasso had two hits apiece.
Spallone struck out four Hawks and didn’t walk a batter in raising her record to 5-6.
Trapasso singled in two runs to highlight Geneseo’s three-run third inning. Fillmore and Brown hit run-scoring triples in the fourth and Williams added a two-run single in the sixth.
