Women's Tennis Edges William Smith

Geneva, N.Y. – The Geneseo women’s tennis team (14-1) edged host William Smith (8-5) Wednesday in a match between two regionally ranked opponents. Geneseo is 15th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional ranking and William Smith is 19th.

The Knights, who beat the Herons for the first time in 13 all-time meetings, secured the victory when sophomore Amanda Rosati (Albany/Academy of the Holy Names) rallied for a win at fourth singles. Rosati, who improved to 11-1 in singles and 23-4 overall, was a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 winner to clinch the match.

Two Knights were double winners. First year Marylen Santos (Jamaica/St. Francis Prep) won in three sets at first singles and teamed with senior Katie Talbot (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) for an 8-6 first doubles win; the pair is now 14-1 in doubles play this year. Santos is now 9-4 at first singles and holds a 22-5 overall mark.

At sixth singles, sophomore Zakiyyah Abdus-Salaam (Mount Vernon/The Ursuline School) stayed unbeaten in singles competition (14-0) by winning in straight sets. Her overall record is 19-0 following her win with sophomore Minxuan Yuan (Flushing/Benjamin Cardozo) at third doubles.

With the win, Geneseo tied the program’s second-highest victory total, trailing only the 2009-10 team that went 16-3. The 2008-09 and 2011-12 teams both won 14 matches.

The Knights play a pair of weekend matches, traveling to New York University (ranked 18th regionally) Saturday and Hunter Sunday.
