Fredonia, N.Y. – The Geneseo softball team (15-13, 8-4 SUNYAC) scored in all but one inning of game two to earn a split with host Fredonia (7-18, 3-9) Sunday in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader. The Knights won the nightcap 13-8 after dropping game one 5-3.
Junior first baseman Samantha Trapasso (Garden City/Garden City) went four-for-five with five runs batted in to lead Geneseo’s 14-hit attack in game two. She hit a two-run home run in the top of the first and added run-scoring singles in the sixth and seventh.
Sophomore shortstop Samantha Brown (Canton/Hugh C. Williams) collected three hits. She scored three runs and drove in two.
Senior right fielder Lexi Williams (Waterford/Shenendehowa), junior third baseman Elise Porreca (Lancaster/Lancaster) and sophomore left fielder Abby Weiss (Hamburg/Hamburg) each contributed two hits. Williams and Porreca both drove in two runs; Weiss stole a pair of bases and scored two runs.
Porreca doubled in two runs and Brown brought home a run with a groundout in the second inning as the Knights jumped out to a 6-1 lead. They added single runs on the third – sophomore center fielder Kayleigh Blersch (Lancaster/Lancaster) scored on a wild pitch – and fourth (on a ground ball off the bat of Williams).
After the Blue Devils scored three fifth-inning runs to pull to within 8-6, the Knights put the game out of reach with five runs in their final two at-bats. Run-scoring singles by Trapasso and Williams highlighted the three-run sixth and Trapasso’s two-run single in the seventh capped Geneseo’s scoring.
Sophomore Nicole Zimmerman (Canandaigua/Canandaigua) earned the win, striking out seven Blue Devils over 4.2 innings to improve to 5-1 on the season. She allowed just two earned runs.
Sophomore Corrin Spallone (Greece/Greece Arcadia), who entered the game one batter after Fredonia’s fifth-inning rally cut the Knights’ lead to 8-6, allowed three hits over the final 2.1 innings for her second save of the season.
Trapasso’s home run was her career-high sixth of the season – she leads the team – and the 13th of her career.
In the opener, Geneseo rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the score in the top of the sixth on a two-out, two-run pinch-hit home run by first year Mikayla Moore (Stillwater/Stillwater) before the Blue Devils pushed across two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Moore’s first career home run came two batters after Williams drew a lead-off walk.
Following Fredonia’s two-run rally to take the lead, the Knights brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh – after Porreca walked with two outs – but the Blue Devils picked up the final out to end the game.
Sophomore Ashley Fillmore (Getzville/Williamsville North) scored Geneseo’s first run, leading off the game with a double then scoring on a single by sophomore shortstop Jenna Reilley (Williamsville/East).
The Knights continue SUNYAC competition with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Buffalo State Monday.
