New York, N.Y. – The Geneseo women’s tennis team (15-2) blanked host Hunter (13-6) Sunday at the U.S. Tennis Association National Tennis Center in a match-up of teams headed to the NCAA playoffs next month. Geneseo won the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title and the Hawks won the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) championship for the 13th year in a row.
The Knights’ win was their 15th of the season – one short of the school record set by the 2009-10 team – and their ninth shutout of the year.
Geneseo is 15th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional rankings.
Sophomore Zakiyyah Abdus-Salaam (Mount Vernon/The Ursuline School) remained unbeaten, raising her overall record to 23-0. She improved to 14-0 in singles (including an 11-0 mark at the sixth spot) with a 6-0, 6-0 win; she was one of two Knights who didn’t drop a set in singles competition.
Abdus-Salaam and sophomore Minxuan Yuan (Flushing/Benjamin Cardozo) were 8-0 winners at third singles, where the pair is 9-0 this year. Yuan is 18-1 overall.
First year Marylen Santos (Jamaica/St. Francis Prep) and senior Katie Talbot (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) teamed to win at first doubles, upping their mark to 15-2. Both were straight-set winners in singles competition; Santos is now 10-5 at first singles with a 25-7 mark overall while Talbot is 9-4 at third singles and 26-6 overall.
Sophomore Amanda Rosati (Albany/Academy of the Holy Names) and senior Sarah Shields (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris), winners at fourth and fifth singles, respectively, were winners at second doubles. They’re 12-1 at that spot.
Rosati is now 12-1 in singles play and 24-3 overall. Shields has won a team-best 27 matches this year; she’s 14-1 in singles play (12-1 at number five) and 27-4 combined.
The Knights are back in action Saturday with a match at College of New Jersey. The Lions are 14th in the ITA regional ranking.
