Women's Lacrosse Clinches SUNYAC Playoff Bid With 18-8 Win Over Buffalo State

GENESEO, N.Y. – The #22 Geneseo women's lacrosse team (10-4, 4-3 SUNYAC) beat Buffalo State (7-8, 2-5 SUNYAC) 18-8 Tuesday to clinch a spot in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoffs.

Geneseo will open play in the five-team SUNYAC Championship Tournament in either next Tuesday’s first-round game between the fourth and fifth seeds or in next Friday’s semifinal round (to be hosted by the top seed).

The Knights will be making their 14th conference playoff appearance in the past 15 seasons.

Junior attack Caroline Buonocore (Syracuse/Westhill) and sophomore attack Katey Hart (Syracuse/West Genesee) both scored five goals to lead Geneseo’s offense. Hart tallied all five of her goals in the opening period and Buonocore scored four of her five goals in the second half.

Buonocore raised her career total to 196 points, matching the program’s third-highest all-time total.

Senior midfielder Rachel Petrone (Rochester/Penfield) and junior attack Meredith Weber (Bellport/Bellport) both collected five points on three goals and a pair of assists. Petrone raised her career totals to 141 points – eighth all-time at Geneseo – and 102 goals. She’s the eighth Knight to reach 100 career goals.

Junior midfielder Emily Haggerty (Syracuse/Westhill) finished with four points, including three goals. Her team-leading 23 assists this spring match her total from last year as the program’s third-highest single-season total. She led the Knights with eight draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Buonocore collected five draw controls and Petrone added three.

Senior Julie Bernatzky (Mount Sinai/Mount Sinai) made six saves – all in the first half – to improve her record to 10-4.

The Knights wrap up their regular season Saturday, hosting New Paltz.
