Shutout Win Leads Geneseo To Softball Split
Rochester, N.Y. – The Geneseo softball team (18-14) pounded Rochester Institute of Technology (10-20) 11-0 in game two of a doubleheader to earn a split of Thursday’s non-conference twinbill. The host Tigers won game one 9-5.

First year Katie Brennan (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) threw a complete-game two-hit shutout and led the Knights with three hits – including her first career home run – to pace Geneseo.

Brennan held RIT hitless over the final 3.1 innings after working out of her only jam in the second. The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs on two walks and a double before the Knights forced a runner at home for one out; Brennan induced a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

Brennan’s home run put the Knights up 3-0 in the fourth inning. Geneseo scored twice in the first inning on a run-scoring single by sophomore outfielder Kayleigh Blersch (Lancaster/Lancaster) and a run-scoring double by senior first baseman Jessica Steubing (Fairport/Fairport).

Sophomore catcher Ashley Fillmore (Getzville/Williamsville North) singled home two runs of the four unearned runs that Geneseo scored in the fifth. The Knights added four more runs in the sixth  with a two-run double by junior third baseman Elise Porreca (Lancaster/Lancaster) highlighting the inning.

Blersch, Brennan, Porreca and Steubing each scored two runs; Blersch, Fillmore, Steubing and sophomore outfielder Abby Weiss (Hamburg/Hamburg) each had a pair of hits.

In game one the Tigers scored six times in the sixth inning to take a 9-2 lead; Geneseo scored three times in the seventh before RIT retired the last two batters to seal the win.

First year outfielder Catherine Krok (Buffalo/Williamsville East) singled home sophomore Jami Cohen (East Amherst/Williamsville East) – who’d hit a one-out double – and two batters later sophomore shortstop Samantha Brown (Canton/Hugh C. Williams) doubled to right center to bring home Brown and senior Alexa Salzman (East Meadow/East Meadow) to pull the Knights to within 9-5.

Brown singled in Geneseo’s first two runs, tying the score at 2-2 in the fifth.

The Knights host doubleheaders against conference opponents Oswego and Cortland Friday and Saturday.
