GENESEO, N.Y. – The Geneseo softball team (19-17, 11-7 SUNYAC) dropped a doubleheader to Cortland in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader, losing the opener 11-1 and falling 5-3 in game two. The Knights are the third seed for next weekend's SUNYAC Championship Tournament and will face fourth-seeded Plattsburgh Thursday at 1 p.m. in their first game. The six-team tournament, double-elimination tournament will be hosted by top-seeded Brockport Thursday through Sunday.
The Knights were held to six hits in the opener and scored their run in the fifth when senior outfielder Lexi Williams (Waterford/Shenendehowa) singled home first year Jenna Phillips (Angola/Lakeshore).
Junior first baseman Samantha Trapasso (Garden City/Garden City) collected a single and a double.
In the nightcap, the Knights rallied from a 4-0 first-inning deficit to pull to within 4-3. After the Red Dragons pushed their lead to 5-3 Geneseo loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh to put the go-ahead run on first.
Sophomore catcher Ashley Fillmore (Getzville/Williamsville North) and sophomore shortstop Samantha Brown (Canton/Hugh C. Williams) led off the inning with singles. One out later senior third baseman Jessica Steubing (Fairport/Fairport) singled to lead the bases before Cortland struck out the final two batters to secure the win.
Brown, Trapasso and Williams each had two of Geneseo’s six hits. Fillmore stole her 23rd base of the year, tying the program’s single-season record.
