Brockport, N.Y. -- The fourth-seeded Geneseo softball team (20-19) opened play at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship Tournament with a 7-4 loss to third-seeded Plattsburgh Thursday at Brockport.
The Cardinals – who were the preseason pick to win the SUNYAC title – scored twice in the first inning to tie the score 2-2 and took the lead with a three-run third inning.
Geneseo was held to six hits, including a solo home run in the seventh inning by junior first baseman Samantha Trapasso (Garden City/Garden City). Trapasso’s home run was the 16th of her career, tying the school’s all-time record.
Sophomore catcher Ashley Fillmore (Getzville/Williamsville East) scored on a throwing error and sophomore second baseman Jenna Reilley (Williamsville/East) singled home sophomore shortstop Samantha Brown (Hugh C. Williams/Canton) to put the Knights up 2-0 in the first inning. Fillmore had reached first on an error and stolen second before Brown’s bunt was thrown away.
Brown led off the third with a single and scored on a wild pitch.
Senior third baseman Jessica Steubing (Fairport/Fairport) had two of the Knights’ six hits.
Geneseo will face sixth-seeded Oswego Friday at 9 a.m.
