Women's Lacrosse Reaches SUNYAC Title Game With 10-3 Pounding Of #16 Fredonia

Cortland, N.Y. – The #22 Geneseo women's lacrosse team (12-4) knocked off #16 Fredonia in the semifinal round of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship Tournament Friday. The third-seeded Knights will face the tournament's top seed, fourth-ranked Cortland, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the SUNYAC final with the league's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs at stake.

Geneseo’s defense – which has allowed three goals or fewer six times this spring – held the Blue Devils nine goals under their season scoring average. The Knights outshot Fredonia 32-14 and scored the game’s first five goals to take control.

Sophomore attack Katey Hart (Syracuse/West Genesee) and junior attack Meredith Weber (Bellport/Bellport) led the Geneseo with three points on two goals and an assist.

Junior attack Caroline Buonocore (Syracuse/Westhill) scored two goals as well.

Junior midfielder Emily Haggerty (Syracuse/Westhill) added a goal and an assist, raising her career totals to 111 goals, 65 assists and 176 points. She’s now tied for third on the program’s career list with 65 assists and her 176 points and 111 goals rank fifth and sixth, respectively. Her team-leading 66 points this season include 28 assists – five short of the Geneseo record.

Haggerty picked up a team-leading five ground balls and Buonocore added four. Senior defender Jenna Theofield (East Northport/Northport) had three ground balls and a team-leading three caused turnovers.

Senior Julie Bernatzky (Mount Sinai/Mount Sinai) stopped seven shots in goal.
