Cortland Wins SUNYAC Softball Title With 8-7 Win Over Knights

Brockport, N.Y. – The Geneseo softball team (22-20) lost 8-7 to Cortland in the finals of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship Tournament. The fourth-seeded Knights had led 7-0 before the second-seeded Red Dragons rallied to win the SUNYAC title.

The Knights scored three runs in first and four more in the second. Senior third baseman Jessica Steubing (Fairport/Fairport) had run-scoring hits in each inning, doubling in a run in the first and singling home a run in the second.

Junior first baseman Samantha Trapasso (Garden City/Garden City) hit a two-run single in the second.

Sophomore shortstop Ashley Fillmore (Getzville/Williamsville North) beat out a bunt top open the top of the first then scored on a Cortland throwing error. A sacrifice fly by senior left fielder Lexi Williams (Waterford/Shenendehowa) capped the three-run first. An inning later, singles by first year right fielder Mikayla Moore (Stillwater/Stillwater) and sophomore catcher Samantha Brown (Canton/Hugh C. Williams) and a walk to Fillmore loaded the bases with no outs. Trapasso’s double put the Knights up 5-0, Steubing followed with a run-scoring single and sophomore second baseman Jenna Reilley (Williamsville/East) reached on an infield error to bring in the final run of the inning.

Steubing finished with three hits. Brown, Fillmore and Moore had two hits apiece. Fillmore and Trapasso both scored a pair of runs.

Steubing and junior third baseman Elis Porreca (Lancaster/Lancaster) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
