Cortland, N.Y. – The Geneseo men’s track & field team placed fifth at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships. The Knights, who crowned two individual champions at the eight-team meet, scored 79.50 points in the two-day competition.
Senior Alex Brimstein (Webster/Thomas) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:17.01. He was one of two Geneseo runners to score in the event; classmate Mike Mattiucci (Webster/Thomas) was eighth in 9:54.84.
Sophomore Luke Taverne (Vernon/Westmoreland) cleared 1.98 meters (6-6) to win the high jump. His mark matched the program’s third-best performance. First year Adrian Bergere (Bethlehem/Delmar) finished seventh, clearing a height of 1.78 meters (5-10).
Senior Chris Carter (Grand Island/Grand Island) set a school record in the 800-meter run, placing fourth in a time of 1:52.65. He ranks 15th nationally this spring.
Two other Knights posted runner-up finishes. Sophomore Christian Igielinski (Perrysburg/Gowanda) was second in the 400-meter hurdles; his time of 55.95 is the program’s sixth-fastest ever.
Brimstein took second in the 5,000-meter run with first year Cohen Miles-Rath (Cohocton/Wayland-Cohocton) finishing fourth. Their respective times were 15:14.85 and 15:18.74.
Sophomore Devon Anderson (Plattsburgh/Beekmantown) finished fifth in the discus throw with a mark of 42.79 meters (140-5) – good for fourth on Geneseo’s all-time list.
Junior Liam Collins (Troy/Averill Park) was fifth in the triple jump. His mark of 13.55 meters (44-5 1/2) ranks eighth all-time at Geneseo.
Sophomore Billy Gabriel (Syracuse/West Genesee) placed sixth in the 1,500-meter run (3:59.83).
The Knights’ 1,600-meter relay team of junior Anthony George (West Seneca/West Seneca), Carter, Benjamin Schwartz (Cortlandt Manor/Hendrick Hudson) and senior Jesse Cleary-Krell (Syracuse/Westhill) took fourth place in 3:22.06, a time that ranks fourth on the program’s all-time list.
Geneseo placed seventh in the 400-meter relay with the quartet of sophomore Phil Longo (Dansville/Dansville), Cleary-Krell, senior Nicholas Hoffman (Williamsville/Williamsville South) and Bergere finishing in 48.60.
